I'm so sick of the austerity/degrowth mindset. We have it within our power to build a society where robots take care of the most boring, least fulfilling tasks, where we can deliver a wider range of goods to people, regardless of geography!

Unfortunately the only people in favour of this are men in their 30s and 40s who listen to podcasts about “Abundance”. There’s only about 500 of us as well.

The cliche about this website is that’s self-righteous people constantly being really obnoxious towards each other, in the name of #BeingKind.

‘I’m going to hound and hector some random guy in the name of protecting people from ‘Kavanaugh Stops’ ❤️’

2. If you arrive in the UK by small boat or by overstaying a legit visa, it’s incredibly difficult for the state to deport you. Hence my ‘de facto’ open borders comment.

3. Sorry I used SS when I should’ve said Indefinite Leave to Remain.

1. Devilishly hard to say how many ppl are illegally in the country (cos our data capturing on this is awful) but estimates put it in the 100,000s… while we forcibly deported about 7k last year. So yeh, it pretty much never happens.

It same arguments could made against any sort of immigration enforcement. "I don’t want kids traumatised when dad’s car washing business is raided and everyone’s papers are checked" etc. Sometimes enforcement is really unpleasant and sometimes mistakes are made.

I see your point but I suspect what Phillips is calling for is not random selections, but picking people up for some questioning when there are reasonable grounds to suspect someone is in the country illegally.

National digital ID cards would help here, I guess.

I do think better of the man and I think public discourse would be much better if everyone took the approach of ‘what are they getting at here?’ in the best possible light, judging them through context and their past stances etc etc.

decide against chancing it. Currently, you will basically never be deported. De facto open borders + limited deterrence, creates an incentive for ppl to overstay, put in claim+claim, appeal+appeal, staying here for yrs and yrs till they eventually get settled status (likely when they have a family)
