"Democracy dies in darkness" I continue muttering to myself in a flat, emotionless, chant-like rhythm as I calmly fire a gun at every determinable light source in the room.

One last bullet is left in the chamber after the final light source is destroyed.

People always forget the ring. It's a core component.

Everyone can continue reporting it. I just did. I encourage others to.

But I'm also adding the point I made to Steam that in Canada where I live, this not only classifies as hate speech (targeted speech against a protected class), it is illegal for a retailer to publish/promote said hate speech.

You can look at it this way:

Sugar charges (and can overcharge) batteries.

Caffeine turns off battery-saver mode.

Either can contribute to hyperactivity. Both will guarantee it.

I'm still mulling over my mixed thoughts on it, ultimately.

It's good, just not great.

Best I can say: It's indisputably the best game that took 14 years to develop.
December 8, 2025 at 2:33 AM
And that's not to its detriment, per se, but it's hard not to notice, and it makes the whole project... interesting as a collage of the last couple of decades of cinematography

ROUTINE has been on and off in development for 14 years & it shows. The game is interesting in how it kind of slideshows design trends through that range of years

It's very clear (via the screenshots) its visual aesthetic took inspiration from Control, & others from Alien: Isolation or Annihilation

It's a very good example of how a lazy ending can sabotage the entire experience. I've never rolled my eyes so hard. It hurt.

But the game's merits are there; especially in its environmental and sound design. The presentation can be stellar, which leads me back to a previous point.

But the story really doesn't carry its weight. It flops around & follows a predictable path all the way to its ending with, frankly, hack-level composition

In a closing cutscene, characters recreate the pose of Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam & I immediately wanted either me or the game to die
December 8, 2025 at 2:33 AM
The plot & narrative are both for the most part passable. I like its approach to the amnesiac protagonist trope. The lapses in memory aren't only from before you picked up the controller; pieces are deliberately missing throughout your experience

Your narrator is utterly unreliable, and I like that
December 8, 2025 at 2:33 AM
It isn't bad, not by any stretch, but in the end it felt... kind of bland. What would've been new in 2012 became already-done and overdone by 2025.

It has some good ideas it never actually follows through with, both in gameplay and (especially) in writing.

And oof, that writing...

Intent isn't lazy. I reserve respectful language for those who I feel deserve it.

Fuck Dawkins

And stop wasting time prescribing etiquette and semantics to people on the internet. You're being the most tedious kind of person
December 7, 2025 at 6:27 PM
And the criticism wasn't petty; it was on Dawkins lagging behind modern science and popularizing inaccurate or false perspectives on evolutionary science, especially when it came to his embracing of often-racist evolutionary psychiatry crank ideas.
