What an… interesting ethos. 😂

I texted @brianbeutler.bsky.social after reading this that it is great (it is!) but that induced a feeling of great foreboding and a wee bit of a panic attack. Brian told me that was the point. Rude.

Watching so many people in high places go through the motions of polling and median-voter whispering can make you feel like you're in Bodysnatchers. It's worth a reminder that the typical experience of tyranny is...basically normal life. Which means we have to will ourselves to fight harder.
The Median Experience Of Tyranny
If the politics of tyranny were self-discrediting, we wouldn't need mantras like "never again."

Ask at your hotel! Sometimes people cancel last minute and leave tix there! At least as of when we went a few years back it was paper tickets and we lucked out! Also Gran Cafe Bib-Rambla for churros is 100% worth the hype.

People of Illinois, we need your help.

Get your cell phones out – record what you see. Put it on social media. Peacefully ask for badge numbers and identification. Speak up for your neighbors.

We need to let the world know this is happening – and that we won’t stand for it.

Truly Kafka-esque and imagine this situation multiplied by hundreds of thousands or millions placed in this uncertainty?

I am a well educated, pretty media literate person whose job it is to be professionally annoying. I cannot figure out if my cancer medication, which costs $17k a month (I do not pay anything thanks to a combo of insurance/access programs), is going to be tariffed 100%.

This is a fundamental point that 99% of higher-ed coverage, and 100% of immig coverage, have missed.

A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.

30% drop year over year!

That framing is quite a choice.

Yes to what Kyle said (though I have not been to River Roast yet). Pizzamici, Publican (or Publican Quality Meats) also excellent. So much good food here.

This point has gotten lost despite my efforts, so lets home in on it directly. A shutdown fight where Dems ignore Trump's abuses of power to take a stand on safe but extraneous issues is like every other shutdown fight we've seen. Taking a stand to rein in Trump makes it something entirely new.

We're not shutting down the government, they are.

Pritzker out here giving a master class in countering the right wing propaganda machine’s efforts to justify further federal invasions and occupations of American cities: he’s effectively reframing the discussion (beyond debates re: crime rates) to one of rising authoritarianism & federal overreach.

Pritzker: "We don't want troops on the streets of American cities. That's un-American and frankly the president ought to know better. This one doesn't seem to. He hasn't read any books. He doesn't seem to understand the Constitution or the laws."

Big thanks to everyone else on the team for seeing revisions through after Hayley graduated, to constructive reviewers, and to the helpful staff at JCI.

Excited to share work led by my PhD student Hayley McMorrow now published in @jclinical-invest.bsky.social. Hayley showed that GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonists rapidly inhibit AgRP neurons and that endogenous GIP is important for nutrient-mediated AgRP neuron inhibition. doi.org/10.1172/JCI1...

NEW — I wrote about the resignation of SSA's chief data officer just says after he blew the whistle on a major data vulnerability, including the full text of his blistering email and how his allegations confirm those made by a previous whistleblower and a former employee back in March:
'Intolerable': SSA chief data officer and whistleblower resigns in blistering email
Charles Borges involuntary resignation comes just days after publicly calling out a critical agency data vulnerability.

Mostly not. Though I’ve gotten better/more realistic at knowing how long each thing takes so I know further in advance how stressed I’ll be and how screwed I am.

Agree with this. Make them fight for every inch. Worth reading this thread.

Monarez is playing her weak hand perfectly, and should be a model for institutional resistance for the next four years:
1. Make them fire you
2. Don’t go along to get along
3. Don’t apologize, have confidence in your own integrity and the importance of your role
4. Always escalate the conflict
