Below is how it started, but this is how it’s going: a punishment that includes exclusion from democratic participation, handed down because of disrupting democratic so-called decorum. The crime of possible intimidation is punished with actual disenfranchisement

Digitizing the archives of Emily Dickinson, arguably the United States' most celebrated poet, "no longer serves the interest of the United States."

Screenshot from Emily Dickinson Museum's newsletter. Full text: Update: IMLS Grant Terminated

On April 9, the Emily Dickinson Museum received notice that a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency, had been terminated the preceding day. In 2023, the Museum was awarded a grant of $117,000 by IMLS to digitize records related to its newly catalogued collection and to locate related information in other repositories with Dickinson family materials. The notice states, “IMLS has determined that your grant is unfortunately no longer consistent with the agency’s priorities and no longer serves the interest of the United States and the IMLS Program.”

Our work to amplify Emily Dickinson’s revolutionary poetic voice – by opening her family homes to visitors, by interpretive and educational use of her family’s material legacy, by holding up her enduring poetry – continues with support from the Museum’s friends and our unending gratitude.

I'm not a particularly fancy man, but I've been in academia a long time, and I don't recall "don't ever discuss material that's extraneous to the class" ever having been mentioned as a "core tenet" of academic freedom.
carlbergstrom.com
Could someone give me an example of a college course in which climate change is clearly not relevant?
Yet in the survey, nearly 55 percent of faculty members said they discuss climate change in their courses despite it not being a required topic. Climate change is an important issue. It should be discussed freely in courses to which it is relevant. But the claim that it is relevant to classes taught by so many college teachers is doubtful, which makes it probable that, in the name of academic freedom, many faculty members are violating one of its core tenets: the responsibility not to abuse the authority of the classroom by introducing extraneous material.
