Given how many banks are still running on COBOL, I don't really have any faith in their other structures.

Don't get me wrong, COBOL is resilient, which is one reason it is so heavily used still in banking (another being brute inertia) but resilience requires adaptability, and it fails that test.

At this point, does Apple even realize how little people believe them on this?

Or have they been giving the safety and security line regarding webkit for so long that they can't even tell how ridiculous this lie is, and always has been?

Microsoft should take a cue from Great British Bake-Off. You can have all the right ingredients, you can have an end product that looks vaguely like what you want, but if you underbake it and it's crap on the inside, you aren't getting a handshake and might be sent home.
