Cats too, famously, of course. Perhaps our ancestors made a mistake in standing up on two limbs instead of four. Lost that looseness and flexibility in our spines from having to hold up all this against gravity. Was it worth it?

“She was brandishing a torch…” that old Lady Liberty…

So you’re admitting that the murderer carried trauma from the previous incident a mere 6mo ago. Then why was he back out on the street getting in front of vehicles if he is so sensitive about them now? Why was he back on field duty at all?

It is cool that algorithmic siloing into self-reinforcing bubbles online is making people rediscover and appreciate analog modes of #scicomm IRL. Great @sarahmackattack.bsky.social talk on this at #SICB2026. Really neat—and cheap—scicomm, if you’re not afraid to get out there where people are.

Why tf is this garbage showing up in the #OpenSciArt feed??

First sleepless night of 2026, and now I’m in a ✈️ taking off westwards to the @sicb.bsky.social #SICB2026 meeting! My workshop is tomorrow afternoon, and “Leapfrogging for Change” panels are on Mon & Wed next week. If you’re also going to the city of anti-ICE frogs, be sure to grab these stickers!

Any of my moots going to #SICB2026 starting this weekend? If so, hit me up as I'd love to say hi IRL, under Portland's decidedly non-blue sky if the weather app on my phone is to be believed. I better pack my cold+rain gear.

Oh, of course, I’ll go with this! We all should.

2025 was the year I finally committed to using Letterboxd even as I upped my movie watching, so I have a complete rated list of 80 films for the year.

Here are two top lists:
1. My top films of 2025
2. Top films I saw for the first time in 2025

Here’s a dusky scene for you, from Durham! Not sure if you knew this rolled ice-cream place or if it was even around when you still had an anchor here, but it turned out to be a nice place to hang out when some old friends came visiting last week. And we got an incredible dusk as a reward.

And to you the same, even from these suburbs where we need more community to thrive

This Green Ibis I met in São Paulo’s Ibirapuera Park is making a double play for today’s #BirdOfTheDay honors as one of the #Waders that is #BranchingOut, checking off both hashtags by wading through a thicket of epiphytes covering this branch high up in a tree!

I’ve had our Audible membership on pause for most of this year, as the kids have been unsure about letting go of, e.g., Slayers, the Buffyverse book only available there, but this is the last straw. You don’t get to splash this trash on my screen and expect to get any more money from me.

Started reading Robert Macfarlane’s “Is a River Alive?” y’day and it has sucked me in like few physical books have in recent years. This quote from Ursula K Le Guin stopped me in my tracks just now, for I have really struggled with being a prof in a college of natural resources for quite a while:

However much one may laugh/cringe at the Twilight movies, you have to applaud them for giving us Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, two of the smartest actors around who are also so empathetic and not full of themselves.

Trying to remember why this guy seemed familiar, and of course it was because he had an opinion about Nature publishing our paper on decoloniality! Why, he was the star of this rank tweetducken of rightwing whining about “woke” ruining science, of course! 😂 🤦🏽‍♂️

Two Lesser Flamingos, with wings held aloft while walking with long strides through the mud of Thane Creek, in this image I was able to capture from before when the area became designated as a Flamingo Sanctuary.

Have dosa/idli gone mainstream in America? Or I guess Costco has enough Desi members to make it profitable to sell 4lb tubs of dosa/idli batter now? And this stuff is pretty good for $8.79 bucks!

(Note that it only shows up under same day delivery in their app)

Next week’s workshop from
@sdnsolidarity.bsky.social sounds amazing: Palestine and India at the Dawn of Decolonization with Esmat Elhalaby, a discussion moderated by Neelofer Qadir, on his new book on the intellectual history of decolonization and solidarity

Look, I don’t know how far these skeets reach (this one has done more numbers than I typically see here) but this cute little fella showed up to hitch a ride on my car today, as if to prove some point. Look at them leafy feet on this leaf-footed bug!
