Hi Bluesky 👋 I'm a conservator & researcher at the University of Lincoln, currently hung up on the material articulation of masculinity in the C18th tapestry interiors at Doddington Hall, Lincolnshire.

Find out why in my Google Arts & Culture exhibition: artsandculture.google.com/story/fwXRxs...
Material Maketh Man: Sir John Delaval and the Doddington Hall Tapestries - Google Arts & Culture
Discover how reconfiguring antique tapestries helped Doddington Hall’s owner, John Hussey Delaval, to elevate his social status in 18th century Lincolnshire.

I'm dipping my toe back into historical whodunnits for a change of scene at the moment, but 'The Butchering Art' is indeed on my list.

Thank you! I might well take you up on that once the dust has settled. I definitely met some characters on my 18th c. travels, whose stories aren't only deserving of academic attention.

Oh, hey, I'm the newbie here! My first book is still a long way off. To write something that reaches more than only academic readers though - with a story like Gillies' that blends good history with a human story - that's the dream.

🖼️ Finally for 2025, our own @leahww.bsky.social will be leading the December event, which will ask what can be learned by listening closely to historic interiors.

New affordable heritage CPD series 📢

Our colleagues at Lincoln Conservation have just launched their new online heritage CPD series for professionals and students.

🗓️ The first event, coming up on 15 October, will look at archiving difficult heritage inclusively.

I'm seriously behind the times (a lengthy PhD will do that to you) but I'd like it to be known how wonderful 'The Facemaker' by @drlindseyfitz.bsky.social is. My first proper postdoctoral read, and what a joy it was - absorbing, well researched and, above all, full of heart and humanity. A triumph 👏

A statement in support of our colleagues in National Trust properties and conservation studios around the country.

Beige text against a burnt orange background reads: As individuals and a team, the academic and technical staff within the University of Lincoln's department of Conservation are shocked and saddened to learn of the redundancies taking place within National Trust conservation studios and properties. The National Trust has been a sector leader in the care and conservation of our shared cultural heritage for generations, and a beacon to which our students look for inspiration, guidance, and experience. We are concerned for what the cuts may mean for emerging professionals and the conservation sector, but we send our heartfelt thanks to each and every National Trust colleague - past and present - who has supported us in our educational and research aims over the years. We are standing with you in solidarity, as one conservation community. October 2025.

I'm indescribably proud to have graduated with a PhD in Conservation and Restoration yesterday evening, in the beautiful surroundings of Lincoln Cathedral, watched over by @uolhumanities.bsky.social colleagues, and alongside @uolconservation.bsky.social students. A perfect day, that I'll treasure.

What a brilliant first day at the @womenshistnet.bsky.social conference! 👏

Thanks to those who came to hear me speak about the Hussey sisters this morning - it was a privilege to tell you their story♀️

Thanks also to the WHN team for trusting me to chair an excellent panel on visual arts 🎨

Also a shout out to secondary school teacher Mr Freeman, who called every girl in every class Gert, and who stood on the little stage in his classroom acting out the bubonic plague. I think he'd be pleased at where this Gert took his lessons.

I don't want to name them publicly, but the lecturer who - in our first seminar on C20th literature - told us that the BA of our degree title stood for 'Bullsh*t Artistry' as we were there to form our own arguments (which may be wrong).

I'd like to congratulate myself (and BBC Good Food) on a very fine plum cake. Recommended if you're still trying to use your harvest up, @jimchesh.bsky.social @lyndaskipper.bsky.social

In my next life I'd like to be symmetrical, so I don't have to trace off pattern pieces twice and make adjustments to each side separately 🤬
leahww.bsky.social
Enjoy! Our plum tree has overreached itself this year and made so much fruit that two branches snapped. Remedial action was needed today, so jam was also made here (not by me as I was writing a conference paper, but I'll enjoy the taste test). On leave now for a(nother) week 👌

A bit of industrial heritage today at Papplewick Pumping Station. Each of these beams weighs 13 tonnes, but the grace of their movement is hypnotic.

Tea with Charlotte Hayes of Covent Garden in my garden this afternoon. Because even though I've completed my PhD I'm not ready to leave the 18th century.
