if people were doing close readings of the text, then maybe some of them could say Well, but i'm putting in effort to see the queerness behind the heterosexual eroticism! i've got every line figured out! but for the vast majority of fandom it's impossible to do a close reading in the first place.

in the rush to Discover The True Meaning people just gloss over the actual text and it's not only bad reading practice, but also disrespectful to the author. they didn't work so hard on writing the text and polishing for you to completely ignore it.

i guess a good rpf headcanon (2 ME) may be a little bit reality-based but is strongly tinted with the "it would be narratively interesting" sentiment. as soon as the headcanon haver starts being snarky it's bad. but "i think he's big because i want to see him get shy about it"? fuck yeah let's go

dick size headcanons? who's a shower and who's a grower? if that's a thing people think about? otoh this & sexuality headcanons are often a (haha) dick measuring contest for people who must Prove they're queerer than the others. 'only cishet fujos/virgins would think that 🙄' etc
