Nothing interesting here
Mostly I worry about some of the other possible interpretations like how the show seems to be negative towards collectivism and pacifism and implies you’re a brainwashed sheep if you buy into a collaborative society, but maybe that’s me being cynical.

It probably isn’t, but I was struck by the idea that they are ready for large swaths of people to die of starvation due to their pacifism, but they’re using their limited resources to cater to a dozen people. Sure they have an unknown agenda, but it also feels pertinent to today.

On its surface it’s body snatchers, but there’s also the idea of the absurdity of an entire society wasting tons of precious resources to service the whims of a dozen individuals. Their motives are still unknown, but that is an interesting (maybe unintentional) commentary on today.

Agreed. There’s a stark difference in tone, casting, and editing choices. American shows tend to have quicker edits, less substance or context shown around conflicts, less non-conflict time, contestants more viscous instead of supportive. Australian shows are the only ones I’ve seen that are similar

10 years ago I was in New Zealand and had a tour guide who talked extensively about her contempt for Auckland because it had been overrun by foreigners. When we said we wanted to move there she told us we couldn’t afford it and they didn’t want more Americans.

My MIL insisted we put china on our wedding registry because one day we’d appreciate it. We didn’t want to, but we caved. Her and her friends bought us the whole set. We’ve lugged it around for 20 years and have never once used it. I realized my MIL has never used hers either. Such a waste.

She might be required to be there, but it is unethical on both her and her employer’s part.

There might have been a little karmic justice in the end, but the film was far too sympathetic to the “protagonist.” I understand this might have been somewhat purposeful to flip the narrative midway through, but it seemed obvious where it was going because where else can someone like that go?

It wasn’t a bad movie by any means, but I do think creators have a responsibility to provide a reality check when indulging in violent fever dreams of conspiracy theorists that confirm their worst instincts. It leaves me wondering what Aster believes and I don’t want to be so conscious of the artist

I just hate that it somewhat tarnishes my view of him, not because I think he’s untalented, but I’m having a hard time separating the art from the artist. I don’t typically ascribe the views of characters to the writer, but the satirization was dripping with resentment in ways it’s hard to uncouple.

We don’t typically decorate so we would never have purchased it, but it might have been a gift someone gave us that we never opened, although it’s weird it wasn’t in a box and that we never opened it. We never found Stuber, but I guess we somehow found the spirit of Christmas.
December 20, 2025 at 6:30 PM
When I finally got it open, it was a Christmas decoration. A snow globe shaped like a lantern with a Santa and snowman inside. When turned on, the whole thing lights up and the glitter moves itself around. It’s cool, but neither of us remember owning this and no one has been in our house.

Clearly it wasn’t our blu-ray, but now we needed to know what it was. The thing was taped up really good with packing tape and multiple layers of bubble wrap I had to rip through. As I’m removing all these layers, the object is sloshing around like it’s filled with liquid.
December 20, 2025 at 6:30 PM
At this point it’s not about watching the movie, it’s about sanity checking ourselves because we swear we bought the movie last year and remember watching it. While going through a cabinet I rarely open, I came across a heavy object wrapped in bubble wrap. Neither of us knew what it was.

I think this every time I see it in a movie or tv show. Like how can this guy really believe this hot, young woman is super horned up for him? She’s clearly a spy, a serial killer, setting up a blackmail, is going to rob him, or harvest his organs. Seeing dudes fall for honeypots in real life is 🤯

I don’t want to discourage you from trying it as maybe it was me or my mood, but what I watched of it didn’t engage me at the time. I had expectations from the original film, the writer, and the actors that just didn’t get met. I hear the film picks up, but is slow early on.

I remember liking the Douglas/Turner version. It had spark, the actors playing well off each other in a constant escalation of petty revenge. With the cast of the new one, I thought it had to be good, but the tone was all wrong. The characters were dull. I only lasted maybe 20 minutes max.

The Star Wars re-releases in the 90s. Packed theaters, happy, excited people cheering, people in costumes, someone walking up and down the aisles in a full on Darth Vader costume with a lightsaber before the movie began. I’ve never experienced that kind of collective exuberance before or since.

Anything by Aronofsky gets exactly one viewing.

Yep. The most common complaint I heard throughout the 2010s from teachers, writers, writing mentors, anyone who spoke to writing classes, was that they encountered a tremendous amount of “aspiring writers” who didn’t read but expected everyone else to read their writing or only had ideas for books.
