Hi everyone! I'm JB and I like to share the books I read. I have an Instagram account with lots of book reviews. Moving forward I'll be sharing those here, too. 📚💙

What is "real money" in this context? They seem to be implying that only gold and silver are real money. Is this not a perfect example of fetishism? Gold and silver are not special. They don't have any inherent, unique characteristic that makes them "real" currency.

@econmarshall.bsky.social has described this better than I can, saying that libertarianism is basically a form of white supremacy. Idk if I'd go that far, but he has a point, especially in the American context where it has always functioned as an attack on the civil rights movement & welfare state.

These people are perfectly happy to embrace hierarchies that benefit them and abuse whatever privileges they can. They only thought (pretended?) they hated the state because it said they had to pay their employees a minimum wage and send their kids to school with black kids.

As I've gotten older I've realized this sort of phony libertarianism developed because the federal government was perceived as helping undeserving (read: black) people. It was never based on any deeper concerns about abuses of power.

China accounted for most of the increase in clean generation: 55% of solar, 82% of wind, and 73% of nuclear, leading for the third consecutive year.

They also accounted for 54% of the global increase in electricity demand.

New analysis from @ember-energy.org shows that compared to the first six months of 2024, the first six months of 2025 saw a 31% increase in global solar generation and a .6% decline in fossil generation. Renewables overtook coal for the first time.

I went down a rabbit hole reading about Walter Rodney and Tanzania and came across a familiar name. Mahmood Mamdani quoted in this paper on the 1964 revolution in Zanzibar. You may have heard of his son @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social 😉✊

I don't know either but I assume it's that contraption in the Chinese fellatio factory Jordan Peterson tweeted about.

The tour by @spaincivilwartours.bsky.social is fantastic if you are ever in Barcelona. The Church of San Felipe Neri was especially touching. It was bombed by Francoist forces in the war killing many children. When we visited there were children playing there again 😭

Collectives in the Spanish Revolution describes the socioeconomic changes in amazing detail, but doesn't cover political or military developments much.

Tough question! I haven't read all of these yet, but I can say Homage to Catalonia by Orwell is many people's first exposure to these events and it's very good writing, but comes from a very specific on the ground perspective that may exaggerate Soviet influence.

My first book of 2025 is the powerful and provocative memoir of Assata Shakur. A member of the Black Panther Party (BPP) and later the Black Liberation Army (BLA), she was hounded by police, spied on by the FBI, and accused of crimes she did not commit 💙📚
Brown book with a picture of a black woman and ASSATA written in red letters at the top. The background is a brown wicker basket surface.

Just finished up this tour with Nick and I can say it is absolutely worth it! One of the best travel experiences I've had. His knowledge, passion, and friendliness are unsurpassed. Thank you, Nick! @spaincivilwartours.bsky.social
