Both growling and operatic singing can't be learnt by winging it. Both can damage a vocalist's voice when not done properly. However the operatic voice not only is vocal sorcery but when it's someone like Tarja it can teach into the soul.

But for me Tarja Turunen gets the crown for her voice that's without comparison reaching into my heart and soul. In her final Nightwish years she became a fully qualified operatic soprano and successfully blending that voice with heavy metal.

Angela Gossow certainly should get the crown for the original female growler. She's ferocious and beautiful.
