Transforming an urban California yard into a small scale wildlife habitat with an emphasis on native plants. Currently growing natives to give away to my local community.
My very first waterlily flower (Hardy Pin Waree) Waterlily pads shade the water, provide cover, & reduce algae. They are great for giving frogs, bees, dragonflies, etc safe platforms for basking, drinking,& egg laying. #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #PollinatorGarden #Pond #LegaseedWildlifeGarden

A little California Western Toad enjoying my mini wildlife pond. Breeding here kicks off in January. One female can lay strings of up to 17,000 eggs in water! That is likely what this little one is up to. #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #ToadAbode #BirdFriendlyGarden #LegaseedWildlifeGarden

My mini wildlife pond (w/ native Azolla, Yerba Manza, & Pickerel). Clear water isnt the goal; plant cover, shade/sun, tannins, oxygen, & undisturbed floor is. No harmful filters. It balances itself. (aqua plant research is a must!) #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #WildlifePond #BirdFriendlyGarden

California’s state dinosaur (Augustynolophus morrisi) was discovered about 30 minutes away from me in Fresno County. I love that this giant, duck‑billed herbivore once wandered my own backyard 70 million years ago. #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #DinoNerd #BirdFriendlyGarden #NaturalHistory

My California Western Toad friend kept visiting my “work-in-progress” mini wildlife pond before I even had a chance to fill it. They drink through a patch on their belly skin, so it’s important to leave water out for these little guys. #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #PollinatorGarden #Amphibians

Got some new toys! Getting back into a long lost and missed hobby. (Thanks, Husband!) Prepping my pick-&-pull foam case tonight. Apologies in advance for all of the upcoming backyard bird pictures. 😜 #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #WildlifePhotography #BirdFriendlyGarden #LegaseedWildlifeGarden

Unless VERY young or in danger (traffic, dogs, pools) the best thing you can do is keep cats away. Have a local Wildlife Rescue's contact info ready just in case. Many vets work directly with wildlife rescues & take drop offs. #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #PollinatorGarden #BirdFriendlyGarden

I added a Reptile Pile to my wildlife garden; complete with basking platforms, hiding crevices, a water dish, and a sand pit for nesting. I also transplanted a native Sacred Datura nearby. #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #PollinatorGarden #Reptiles #LegaseedWildlifeGarden

I built a few hibernaculums by digging below the frost line, adding layered materials, and covering them with branches and leaf litter. Perfect shelter for California salamanders and other critters year‑round.

Dead Hedges are wildlife gold. Stacked branches, twigs, leaves, & wood create shelter, nesting spots, safe travel routes, and produce warmth as they break down. Keep it away from your structures & stay fire safe! (Not my pic) #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #PollinatorGarden #BirdFriendlyGarden

Added several Critter Corridors so animals can access our wildlife garden. They reduce road crossings, deprivation, and dead ends—and help local ecosystems stay healthy. ALL CRITTERS WELCOME HERE #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #Amphibians #Reptiles #SmallMammals

Housing developments continue to put tons of invasive species in landscaping. I hope that changes. I pulled out tons of Mexican Feather Grass, Nandina (poisonous to birds), & ice plant. Added native seeds B4 the rain. #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #PollinatorGarden #BirdFriendlyGarden

Toad Abode in the works. Augured holes, irrigated, and covered the area with branches. We had toads inhabiting the burrows in less than 24 hours! Babies were everywhere after a couple months. #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #ToadAbode #BirdFriendlyGarden #LegaseedWildlifeGarden

Progress pictures of a little 45 gallon wildlife pond we built this past summer. It has come a long way since these were taken. Pics of it finished coming soon! #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #PollinatorGarden #WildlifePond #LegaseedWildlifeGarden

I built a nesting platform and covered it with local clay. Fingers crossed! Most likely to inhabit here in South Central Valley California: Cliff Swallow, Barn Swallow, Dove, Black Phoebe. #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #PollinatorGarden #BirdFriendlyGarden #LegaseedWildlifeGarden

Feeling lucky. 🌈 Every single time it rains, we get a rainbow over our Valley Oak Tree. (Sunflower plantings courtesy of our resident Scrub Jay pair) #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #PollinatorGarden #BirdFriendlyGarden #LegaseedWildlifeGarden

A mud dish is a great addition to a garden. I wet mine down every day in the dry months. Mud puddles are beneficial & often a means of survival for several types of butterflies, wasps, bees, & mud nesting birds #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #PollinatorGarden #BirdFriendlyGarden

Look back: A Western Tiger Swallowtail found my Mother's Day Flowers while camping in the Sequoia Foothills. Shortly after, a squirrel found them, too, & snipped the blooms right off; leaving me with a vase full of stems. No hard feelings. 😂 #WildlifeGarden #PollinatorGarden #seqioianationalpark

Reminding myself that I'm “Aiming for Ecosystem”. A stunning Cooper's Hawk has been lying in wait in my yard for a few days and it finally had a successful catch. Circle of Life. 🌅 #WildlifeGarden #NativePlantGarden #PollinatorGarden #BirdFriendlyGarden #LegaseedWildlifeGarden
