University courts didn’t deal with all matters, capital crimes came under criminal courts. Punishments varied from university to university. In Denmark, students were imprisoned in the university jail. In Sweden things went further; where a student was executed in the 18th century

Gradually, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries university self-jurisdiction dissapeared as universities became subject to the courts of the realm. At Oxford this was the Chancellor’s Court and it had jurisdiction over university members even if they got in trouble up in Norfolk.
