One update a day, sent directly to a thermal printer in Wes’s house
Started today reconnecting with a few old coworkers as part of my quest to find non minimum wage employment. Then did a bike ride where I got to see Hobart from up high on Mount Nelson. Finished with salmon and Heated Rivalry

Today I dropped Bessie off at the car doctor, but she is still there overnight (being repaired tomorrow). Lauren is still hurting from her fall but still had a monster day at work. Hopefully these eggs help heal her. Going to bed now to hopefully feel better in the morning.

Today I met with some prospective new housemates, worked a short shift where I met an NHL player’s dad and a couple from Montreal, and then went to a nautical-themed seafood restaurant. We are also starting to contemplate spending a lot of money on our last month!

Today was the day of eating Nepalese food. Lunch was leftovers from Lauren’s visit to her coworker Sandy’s house (lentil soup, rice, chicken curry) and after work, I went to get Momo (Nepalese dumplings) with my coworkers Ruby and Akash. We are big fans!

Today Lauren and I both started at 3 so enjoyed a leisurely start and drove in together. Unfortunately Lauren took a nasty spill in the rain after I dropped her off; she didn’t go to the ER but feels like she got run over by Bessie. Hopefully all is well in the morning.

Today things were pretty chill. I delivered some wine samples to a very lucky journalist staying with us, then I had ice cream on the wharf while watching seagulls break mussels open, then we went to trivia and finished in the top 5 with a mostly Canadian crew!

We both had the day off today and tried to put it to good use. Last night I must’ve run over a tiny spike because my tire was flat today, so I had to do a quick change in time to get to the coffee shop before it closed. Good thing I have mad skills. Then went to the botanic gardens to watch birds

Today was a bizarro day at work because the morning (which I was not there for) was apparently the busiest it’s been in 3 years, but when I showed up there were 4 of us working with nothing to do. Here’s me, Pradeep and Akash delivering some bags all at once (efficiency)

Yesterday was fairly uneventful. There is a cruise leaving today for ANTARCTICA so a bunch of people were checking in yesterday with suitcases full of winter gear. Apparently it’s about as cold there as in Calgary right now (in case any Calgarians were having second thoughts)

At work today we had a snafu where we delivered the bags to the wrong room but caught it 30 seconds before the guests arrived… makes you wonder how often this happens! Lauren also did a great shop at the farmer’s market. Here’s some UTas art from near work!

Today was our second consecutive day off. Our New Year’s resolution was to spend more money- I mean see more of Tasmania, so we shopped the Lulu sale and then went to a beach. Bessie is going to the mechanic in a week so we’re hoping to do more of this soon!

Today we called dad for his birthday (luckily the Habs won for him!) and then went to MONA. We had a fantastic time there: there’s a big open park area where we had lunch, then the museum was a great place to spend a few hours, then we finished by watching a man from Oregon play bagpipes

2026 started quite sleepily for everyone in Hobart, including the bus driver who failed to pick Lauren up for work. We pivoted and I chauffeured her instead and spent the day reading in town. We also booked our flights back to Calgary, getting in on the 28th of March!

Happy new year! It ended up being a pretty special day. Got to see a boat come in while calling Wes (who is still in 2025) then worked while watching the kid fireworks, then watching the real fireworks over the harbor with my bestie.

Very crazy day! There was a girl who bought a car TODAY and brought it to valet (300000kms manual 4wd with no muffler). There was Taste of Tasmania food fest (which Lauren delivered to my work). There was a yacht race party with live band. There was a double rainbow.

In some ways today is less exciting than yesterday’s boat race because all I have is this gym pic. Work slammed us today and I was constantly moving bags and trolleys around. But the good news is they canceled Lauren’s shift so we got to hang (and run into my coworker Akash at the grocery store!)

Yesterday we were lucky enough to see the finish of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race! We finished work at 5 and got to see the winner pull up at 6 while drinking sangria on a patio, then saw 2nd place (pictured) pull up half an hour later. Boats will be coming in all week!

Today Lauren got paid to go to Pilates so Tom and I went to the maritime museum which was a good way to spend an hour. I loved this painting of the harbour where I work and the whaling stuff was crazy as well. We finished up with a BBQ at home before heading back to work tomorrow

Yesterday Lauren worked a marathon Boxing Day shift making $74/hour and we met up afterwards for a cocktail and fish and chips. I gave Emma and Tom the tour of Macq01 as well, which might have gone better if we had eaten the fish and chips first!

Merry Christmas! We were kept on our toes all day by rain but we fared much better than my parents in -20 at home. We went for a walk, got coffee at the only place open (next door) and played ticket to ride (I lost to Lauren by two points). Then an awesome roast chicken with homemade stuffing (yum)

Christmas Eve yesterday, which meant trying to track down pierogi which is not easy to do in Tasmania. Luckily, the only store that sells them is on the bike path 3km from us and we pass it every day, AND it doubles as a butcher so they are feeding us for the next few days. Welcome to Hobart Emma!

Forgot a few updates! Two days ago was a workday where I found out I won the work scavenger hunt which means Lauren and I are going to the movies with enough snacks to make us throw up. I went to the park afterwards to watch the sk8er bois sk8

Secret Santa at work today! Luckily it is secret because otherwise I would have fought my Santa for giving me skincare products and a furby. But vibes were great. Also chatted with guests from Dubai! Also Lauren and I met after work to eat chicken tenders from Grill’d. Big day.

At work today there was a scavenger hunt where you had to solve clues about items in our hotel… all while pretending to do your real job. After I succeeded at that, we cranked Christmas up to 11 with our housemate Andrea.
December 21, 2025 at 11:45 AM
Today we lathered up on sunscreen because the sun came out again and everyone was burning within 10 minutes of being outside. We spent most of our time on creative pursuits (Christmas-related) and ate intuitively (dinner at 4pm because we were hungry)
