Have you heard of #AntarcticaInSync? A UNESCO-endorsed program for coordinated science in Antarctica & the Southern Ocean (www.antarctica-insync.org). We - APECS - aim to represent us early career scientists in the project 🙌🏼. You can find all FAQs on our new website: apecs-germany.de/antarctica-i...

Using the same concept, in a follow-up study (Kreuzer et al), we explore how relative sea-level change can affect sub-shelf melting.
🌊 Sea-level shifts can alter ocean access to grounding lines
❄️ But its melt impact is small compared to climate-driven changes.

Bathymetry-constrained impact of relative sea-level change on basal melting in Antarctica
Abstract. Relative sea level (local water depth) on the Antarctic continent is changing through the complex interplay of processes associated with glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). This involves nea...

🧊 New study in The Cryosphere!

We identify oceanic gateways that could channel warm water to Antarctic grounding lines, based on high-res bathymetry. These deep pathways could drive major ice-shelf melt when cavities switch from ‘cold’ to ‘warm’ melt conditions.

Bathymetry-constrained warm-mode melt estimates derived from analysing oceanic gateways in Antarctica
Abstract. Melting underneath the floating ice shelves surrounding the Antarctic continent is a key process for the current and future mass loss of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Troughs and sills on the con...

Exciting year ahead for APECS Germany!
We’re happy to introduce our new Chair team for 2025/26: Lukas Monrad-Krohn will serve as Chair, supported by Co-Chairs Lena Nicola and Joana Steffens.
We’re looking forward to a great year with the polar early-career community!❄️☺️

You can now read our assessment, ideas and suggestions in our paper published in Journal of Glaciology, concerning questions such as: What kind of community do we hope to build over the next fifty years? What are current challenges and barriers? 🔍

With the paper, we are not trying to say what everyone in our field agrees on, but rather here is what we, some 42 authors, agree on and what we, with our various kinds of influence, biases and backgrounds, can or could do about it.
Many thanks to my co-authors for their contributions and help 🙏

Next to lectures on e.g. numerical modelling, polar meteorology or ice-ocean interactions, we also had the chance to reflect on how and by whom our science is done, and what role we, predominantly early-career researchers attending the school, play in shaping our community in the future. 💪

📣 New paper: Where do we want the glaciological
community to be in 2073?
Some context: The Karthaus summer school is an occasion where parts of our research community comes together — In 2023, I was lucky to participate myself and it was the year in which a new workshop was included in the program.

⛰️ In a new study in @science.org, we project that 39% of the global glacier mass is committed to be lost irrespective of future warming.

However, a lot can still be saved - see title:
“Glacier preservation doubled by limiting warming to 1.5°C versus 2.7°C”

Climate research folks, do consider the Climate and Cryosphere Open Science Conference in Wellington, New Zealand, 9-12 Feb 2026. Southern Summer talking about climate and ice.

Abstract submission closes on 31 July 2025.

With a bonus @scar-antarctic.bsky.social INSTANT meeting alongside it.
