Oscar race after SAG awards?

Moore is definitely the one to beat, Brody is still the frontrunner but Chalamet’s fans have the right to hope, Culkin has already won, Saldana’s worst competition is Emilia Pèrez’s backlash, while Best Picture is three horses race (Conclave, Anora, The Brutalist)

Geneviève Page (1927-2025), charming and talented French thespian, plus genuinely seducing screen presence. She gave noteworthy contributions with supporting turns to celebrated titles, such as El Cid, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes and, ça va sans dire, Golden Lion winner Belle du Jour. RIP

I AM STILL HERE (AINDA ESTOU AQUI) by Walter Salles is a serious, robust and emotionally charged (though in a very sober way) historical (and political) drama, that finally could bring an Oscar to Brazil. Based upon the memoir by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, in which he tells his father’s tragic death

I agree that “Emilia Pèrez” Star Karla Sofia Gascòn’s far right troll mode tweeting is hateful but I’m also sad that the indignation mixed to transphobic hate casted a dark shadow to the first Oscar nom for a transgender actress, an exploit that deserved to be celebrated in a total different way

Emilia Pèrez is not even my fav picture among the ones nominated to the Oscar this year, but the social hating Audiard’s film is receiving, particularly transphobia against sensational co-lead Karla Sofia Gascòn, who plays the titular role, makes me hope that it will get the most from its 13 noms

Echoes of Gus Van Sant’s and Chloe Zhao’s Cinema enrich photographer Luke Gilford’s very promising first film as Director. NATIONAL ANTHEM is a dazzlingly profound, inclusive and sensuous “coming of age” set in a definitely interesting and quite unusual milieu such as the Queer Rodeos. Recommended!

David Lynch (1946-2025)

😭

Totally speechless

People are entitled to not share the enthusiasm for Emilia Pèrez, Golden Globes winner and Oscar frontrunner (at least in two categories) but I’m offended that many negative
comments through Audiard’s film are plain transphobic slurs against the co-lead Actress Karla Sofia Gascòn. That’s so unfair!

For what it counts Alison Steadman in Better Man as Robbie Williams’s caring granny does more than Judi Dench in Belfast (but the dependable Kate Mulvany, who plays the leading man’s mum, actually doesn’t do more than Caitriona Balfe, just because some things are really hard to forget)

Oscar Shortlist - Best International Film

A very good news for Italy and Maura Delpero. Her film “Vermiglio”, Grand Prix winner in Venice, made it. The Oscar nomination is not certain yet but clearly it has shown to be a stronger contender respect what some pundits had to say about its submission

Unsung Heroes (I hope not): If EL CID is one of the best films of Anthony Mann (or, at least, one of my favs), French thespian Genevieve Page has a lot of merit about it, since her scheming incestuous princess (who lives for her frail brother, John Fraser) represents the movie’s most unique element

All We Imagine As Light by Payal Kapadia has been chosen by Film Comment as Best Film of the Year and I couldn’t agree more with such choice. Pity India didn’t pick it as their AMPAS submission for Best International Feature, now they would have a strong contender for, at least, an Oscar nomination

Unpopular opinion: I love Andie MacDowell in “Four Weddings and a Funeral”. She’s sparkling and pretty, besides she sells with grace a distinct "modern woman" vibe. I also have no problem with the notorious “Is it still raining?” moment, that I find lovely and well in tune with the test of the film

The contrary of what SPC has been accused to make (can’t understand why since it’s based upon a novel) in Toronto with On Swift Horses implying with press material a romantic affair between Daisy Edgar-Jones and Jacob Elordi who are both playing LGBTQ+ characters in the movie

Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez wins big at EFA awards (five prizes: Film, Director, Screenplay, Editing and Actress, for Gascon). That’s clearly a good sign for French Oscar submission, the favourite in International Film category, and with very good chances also in Best Song and Supporting Actress

You’ll never speak enough about ITI MAPUKPUKAN (The Missing) by Carl Joseph Papa, an heartfelt pinoy animation feature that carefully deal with a delicate topic as the child abuses and the difficulties to overcome such traumas. A young man could start over thanks to his mom’s and boyfriend’s support

Wicked (part 1) by Jon M. Chu works both as a film version of the beloved musical both as a movie adaptation (still loose) of Gregory Maguire’s novel. The two parts solution allows to focus more on dramatic aspects but maintaining the beautiful songs, the lovable characters and the inclusive message

Molto attuale

For me the most unexpected but still definitely ravishing film celebrity couple. Franco + Vanessa

I have no problem to say I love every second Lois Smith appears in “East of Eden” and sadly her screen time in Kazan’s legendary adaptation of celebrated Steinbeck’s Americana is definitely too short, besides her chemistry with Jimmy Dean is fantastic
November 22, 2024 at 2:12 PM
Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton are co-leads in Golden Lion winner “The Room Next Door”, first English language feature film by legendary Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, so I definitely salute SPC choice to campaign both of them in Best Actress, even they aren’t considered among the frontrunners

Unpopular opinion: Alicia Vikander would have deserved her Oscar in 2015 for her riveting turn as an an AI in Ex Machina (Alex Garland) and not for the suffering but supporting wife in the forgettable The Danish Girl (Tom Hooper). Anyway in both cases it would have been an egregious category fraud
