Interested in interactions between females & males on the path to fertilization? We reviewed the evidence for these complex female-male interactions. Thanks to my amazing co-authors for taking me along on this exciting journey (my first review paper)! Out now #OpenAccess

Figure 2 from Daupagne et al 2024 (https://doi.org/10.1530/REP-24-0238). Female–male interaction effects occur on the successive steps of the fertilization process in species with both internal (A) and external (B) fertilization.

Welcome to Sweden! It's a great place to do science! Looking forward to see what you are up to.

Always on your side. Whatever it takes.

This truly is a shame. Still, he is not up for re-election, so I am still voting green. Good that this man will no loger run the ministry, no matter what though. But also don't think there is gonna be any improvement after the election given the parties likely in power.

One last adventure for 2024 - a snow hike to the highest peak in the Elsass - the Grand Ballon 🇫🇷. All survived and now its time to welcome 2025 with a Swiss Cheese Fondue! 🇨🇭

31 December 1995. Still the perfect goodbye.
The final Calvin and Hobbes cartoon. The entire page is mostly white as they're in the winter snow. The pair is walking with a sledge, nicely duffled in in scarves, hats, gloves. Calvin delightedly exclaims 'wow, it really snowed las night! Isn't it wonderful?'. Hobbes follows up with 'Everything familiar has disappeared! The world looks brand-new!' -- A new year... a fresh, clean start!' adds Calvin. As they look over the landscape, Hobbes observes 'it's like having a big white sheet of paper to draw on!' -- 'A day full of possibilities!' Calvin affirms. They get ready on their sledge and Calvin tells his friend 'it's a magical world, Hobbes, ol' buddy... let's go exploring!', and the pair sledges off into the wintery landscape.

This suggests that sexual selection is as relevant for the evolution of SSD in species with reverse SSD (i.e. female-biased) as in male-biased species. Still, this is a makroevolutionary pattern and selection forces will vary a lot between individual species.

Thanks for your interest! That is a good question, which indeed we tried to adress in the paper (tough it was not our main focus). We found that across all species, the sex-bias in SSD did not predict the strength of the relationship with sexual selection (Figure S3A).

We found pre-copulatory but not post-copulatory sexual selection correlated with male-biased SSD. Suggesting that components of sexual selection (but not only sexual selection) drive SSD.

Intro: I am an evolutionary biologist interested in sexual selection & the interaction of evolution & ecology. In my research I combine experiments with meta-analysis. I worked on a variety of different species from flatworms to mice & now fish. For more see: www.researchgate.net/profile/Lenn...
