1 Weavers, Breakers, and Shifters Sunrays filter through Olena’s dingy window with fluttering specks of dust polluting their usual gold. Their beams warm her back as she rests her head on the windowsill to pray. The Sun gives us life. The Sun gives us sustenance. The Sun gives the Thunderstone name its power. “Bless the Moon, the Stars, and the Sun.” Raising her head, she inhales sharply before opening her eyes. This is her morning, every morning, from the moment she stepped into the palace to the moment her heart pauses with death. This is what she knows. With an exhale, she releases the tension of her prayer and allows herself to be brought back to the stone beneath her knees. She swipes the dust from the window, craning her neck to look for any sign of life below, but the frosted glass shields her eyes from the bustling village. Her blood may ensure her place in the line of succession, but she knows nothing of the people she could rule if some miraculous disaster decided to kill or impair about five of her half-siblings. But Olena has chosen not to care because her place is in the libraries where she’s bored of the books, in the shiny halls where the marble is too dark, or in the hidden office of her father where she is meant to reside in the corner.
