I can't read past the first paragraph as a non-subscriber, but I love that the completely normal and sensible statement, "it's getting dark earlier, remember to watch for cyclists" immediately veers into blaming the cyclists

oh another one is that I became involved in abortion stuff almost entirely through social media. I had done clinic escorting with my IRL bestie in DC, but everything after that, including my current OARS work, came through online connections. also from Toastie Twitter actually!

finally, there are people who have to get abortions because of problems with the pregnancy, and our rhetoric should not abandon them. these people often feel profound grief. that doesn't mean abortion was the wrong choice; it just means that something really horrible happened to them.

other times, the grief is more related to guilt and abortion stigma (persistent feelings of "being a murderer," for example). relationship problems and mental health issues are attributed to the abortion.

some of that grief is helpful to interpret through a reproductive justice lens: people want to parent, but can't - often for financial or social reasons outside their control. this can feel really sad to people once there was a potential baby on the scene, much like a miscarriage does.

like many aspects of abortion, this is complex to talk about because so many things are true at once. it IS true that most people feel relief; it is also true that people feel sadness or grief.

Kirby is, instead of negating the frame, eating it, and saying "They are using the threat of future bad feelings to try to short-circuit your ability to make a decision based on what you actually want and need. Getting an abortion can feel sad and still be the right choice."

I have a great internet parenting(-but-not-only) group that came from the Toast comment section > Toastie Twitter > Toast Slack > current Slack iteration. Having a group of friends who are figuring out parenting together has profoundly changed my experience of this stage of my life for the better

Legit, I'm not woo at all but I have a sincere belief that Boulder specifically is haunted because of its founding

Boulder was founded in late 1858 when prospectors led by Thomas Aikins arrived at Boulder Canyon during the Colorado Gold Rush. Arapaho leader Niwot allowed them to stay for the winter, but the settlers abused this peaceful approach, and some later took part in the Sand Creek massacre of Arapaho. In early 1859, gold was discovered along Boulder Creek, drawing more miners and merchants to the area. The Boulder City Town Company was formed in February 1859 to establish a settlement at the canyon mouth. The Boulder, Nebraska Territory, post office opened on April 22, 1859.
