Which brings us full circle. Yes, Tally is an app that saves sounds, especially voices. But really it saves your connections to people. What they know, believe, and have done. But also—somehow—a bit of who they are. It all will be there, kept safe and sound, forever and ever.

A sound can transport you to a different time and place, and a voice can bring you close to someone even when you’re apart. Someone’s voice doesn’t just tell you what they say. It captures what they’re like and who they are. Save someone’s voice, and you’ve saved a bit of them.

But more than that, voices are special because sound is special. We forget it in our digital world of flashy pixels where sound is a multimedia sidekick, but sound has an amazing power that visual media do not. (Watch a movie without its score sometime and you'll understand.)

Why sounds, and why voices? Because we communicate with sound naturally and easily. Most of us start in our first year of life and some of us never stop. When you want someone to share information, having them just talk the easiest way for them to do it.

What kinds of things? The things that keep us connected to the people we care about. Stories, memories, and shared knowledge. Personalities, quirks, and inside jokes. That song parody was (mildly) funny, but the sound of your mom laughing has it beat, and it’s not close.

Tally began with this question: what if we used those pocket supercomputers to capture things differently? Aim for quality over quantity, depth over breadth, and less over more. Instead of capturing things we won’t remember tomorrow, capture the things we never want to forget.

We all spend so much time capturing and sharing *stuff* with our fancy pocket supercomputers. It’s fun, but honestly, it can be shallow and forgettable too. Do you remember what you posted on social media a week ago? a day ago? an *hour* ago? We didn’t think so.
