Have you heard of "A Place For All My Books?" I just played it for the first time yesterday and I feel like you'd enjoy it. Crunchy enough to want to sink your teeth in and try to optimize every turn, but accessible enough to bring to a family crowd who only plays light-to-medium complexity games.

I don't outright disagree, I think when done intentionally it can achieve what you are suggesting. I just prefer freer exploration over punishment.

In the "Amnesia Fortnight" movie Double Fine did, one of the groups made a prototype where you slowly have to lose all of your divine powers in order to become mortal and reach the end. Cool concept, not quite as fun as it sounds, but maybe still worth exploring?

Really love that one, some nice puzzles that never felt too overwhelming for me.
