interesting read of Marco Inaros's actions against Earth/Mars in the expanse:
It’s telling that when Marco addresses the Free Navy after the attacks, the Inners’ perception of the Belt is his focus: “One hit. . . would have been a triumph! Two proved our tactical brilliance. But after three, the Inners will never perceive us as weak again!” (“Gaugamela”). The point of the attacks was not to revel in the blood of the oppressor, but to destroy the colonial system as a whole. Marco even claims that Earth and Mars have a right to exist—they must just stay within their respective atmospheres. The attacks are more about ending the persecution of the Belt than the Inner lives that are lost. The violence of the Inners is fundamentally different from the anti- colonial violence of the Belters. The violence of the Inners normalizes the colonial relationship between them, causing tragedies like Eros to be noth- ing more than a news story during prime time and the murder of thou- sands of innocent Belters on Anderson Station a “message.” Because the violence of the Inners—the boot on the Belt’s neck—and the dehumaniza- tion that make it possible are baked into their relationship with the Belt, they fail to even see their hypocrisy in demanding nonviolence from those they exploit. Anti-colonial violence, on the other hand, strikes out directly at this double standard: the ontological categories of colonialism that keep the colonized from being fully recognized as humans. In the colonial con- text, the usual insistence that violence is never the answer (the “official” position of the Inners and a sentiment to which various members of the OPA are sympathetic) effectively accepts the terms of the oppressors: that a century of exploitation and murder can coexist with a peace treaty, while righteous self-assertion cannot. If we instead understand the Belt’s attack as transcending mere bloodthirst and demolishing the unquestioned colo- nial system that denies their very humanity, the case for anti-colonial vio- lence becomes much more compelling.
