Having reached a thousand followers here (!), it's clearly time for me to do a big ol' self-promo thread of "Here's the parts of my TTRPG work I think you should know about!".

So here we go:

I attempted a five-second search and was all "Widdie... dragon.. horse... Bah, I know it changed not that long ago!".

Am I making progress on ANY personal projects during the teachers' strike up here? Fuck no.

But for a nice change, I don't feel even slightly bad about it.

I am particularly embarrassed by both of these people, in large part because if you go far ENOUGH back, I have been both of them.

...Flash card reading device and *colourful* worksheets arriving tonight, and I'm making an exercise using Once Upon A Time Cards for teaching "Basic story elements", which should shift us to four (better) worksheets, five activities tomorrow?

Papa School in teaching strike, day 2:

Worksheet-heavy day attempted: Six worksheets plus three activities. Functional, and I'm not falling-over drained, but not highly engaging, and probably low-retention for kiddo. But...

Just saying, Prism has a fairly direct way of answering "I want to do X with my inferno (or other) power, how hard is that?" that's worth seeing.

The chief lesson of Final Fantasy Tactics is that real heroes will be demonized and attacked and erased, not celebrated, by those in power.

Read it aloud, as dialogue between Vladimir and Estragon!

Godot produced this, and you'll never convince me otherwise.

They've had at least a few days to recover, so maybe we should check in and see how the robot sex was?

Had it all growing up, and naturally became a reckless fool that caused the death of a lover. Was driven into exile as a result; then became a bitter intellectual...

Look, that's an unsuccessful questor for resurrection, who turned to black magic in grief, but didn't learn what they *wanted.*

"We'd have a recession if it wasn't for all the AI spending" actually means "We are in a recession which is partially obfuscated *from statistics* (and nobody else) by rich people playing silly buggers with large transactions between each other".

"Yes, but not for the usual stuff" is my personally preferred answer.

Saw "gen AI" in a headline, and was like "I swear if y'all start calling a generation of people after this there will be fucking blood on the floor."

But then I realized that they meant "generative".

Anyway, send blood pressure medication.

I strongly suspect that people just... Heard the terms and immediately missed the point.

What we mostly have now is Steampulp. Which I like, I'm just... Wish it was called right.

I'm coming to the belief that new technology arcs will henceforth have two or three hype-launch-fail cycles, each some number of years apart, and *at least* one of those cycles as the tech grows closer to readiness will be "Good enough to abuse, but not good enough to use."

I can only point to said book as a clear example. The connection's gone now, but there was a bit of one for a while.

William Gibson and Bruce Sterling's The Difference Engine is the primary point of contact for Steampunk as punk. They're thin on the ground, but it HAD a passing acquaintance.

Had.

Day one of teachers strike in Alberta. "Dad school" was math worksheets with an improvised meeple counting tool, going for a walk to talk about trees, nature colouring sheets, day & night cycles with a globe & lamp, and bringing those together to talk about seasons.

I did good! I'm already tired.

Yeah, FOSS does include instances of "Here, teach yourself French from this copy of Shakespeare", and that's an absurd task. But that's not learning itself being hard, that's "Nobody is teaching on this one at all".
levikornelsen.bsky.social
Oh, I'm not saying it's fair, even a little.

My claims are just: There IS an ecosystem that's not out to fuck you over, and while you DO gotta do work to get into it, it's MOSTLY not nearly as hard as people claim.
levikornelsen.bsky.social
Just as an aside, I think this is an outgrowth of that most persistently bedevilling of lies: That learning is hard.

"I find open source software too hard to use / understand" is an admission that you are entirely at the mercy of people with the money to build a super-slick interface, who will ALWAYS fuck you for money.

Jank is the price of digital freedom.
