Hey let’s talk about movies
YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU Best Picture 1938 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Perfect wholesome content impossible to watch without smiling and inspired by the optimism and whimsy of Grandpa Vanderhof and his eccentric clan of family and friends.

THE LIFE OF EMILE ZOLA Best Picture 1937 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Brilliant courtroom scenes. Dreyfus was result of antisemitism yet the word Jew is never said, the topic never broached. Film misnamed. Zips through Zola’s adult life, a notable man worthy of a biography, with second hour only focused on Dreyfus.

THE GREAT ZIEGFELD Best Picture 1936 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The musical numbers and production are brilliant, especially A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody, which is spectacular. This film had no business being three hours long.

MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY Best Picture 1935 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Toxic boss gets his comeuppance while rakishly handsome Clark Gable sans mustache gets to live his best life with island bride and chonky cute baby.

*Last film I was able to watch with my mom on her final year journey.

IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT Best Picture 1934 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ah, the first rom com to set the stage for all future rom coms. Well paced with winning performances by leads Gable and Colbert. 1930s era planes, trains, and automobiles (in this case a bus, some hitchhiking, and then a car) is full of amusing hijinks.

CAVALCADE Best Picture 1933 ⭐️⭐️

Covers the first 33 years of the 20th century. From the Second Boer War to just before the start of WWII with Titanic and WWI in between. The costumes, set design, effort to portray London life during the era are impressive. It felt flat, no emotional connection.

GRAND HOTEL Best Picture 1932 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Star studded cast with Crawford, both Barrymores, Garbo. Both Barrymore bros in different roles playing off each other was a delight. Elegant acting, perfect wardrobe, hotel is a great set piece, interesting characters, unexpected plot twist; pure and timeless.

CIMARRON Best Picture 1931 ⭐️

Film poster looks like a Harlequin Romance paperback cover and nothing like that actually appeared in this film. Watching this, I felt like I was in a delirious fever dream. So much more I could add but can’t due to character limits.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT Best Picture 1930 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Idealism to disillusionment, futility of those having served the longest, armchair warriors who had no clue what it was like to be on the front lines, those who felt more at home amongst soldiers than their own family, still resonates today.

THE BROADWAY MELODY Best Picture 1929 ⭐️
Quaint. A struggle watch in most other respects. Mediocre acting for story of two sisters leaving their small town Vaudeville act to make it in NY. Girl loves boy who loves her sister and then happily ever after. Easy to follow but no real emotion.

WINGS Best Picture 1927 ⭐️⭐️
The spectacle of a 2 hr war film with aviation was massive for its era. Decent but uneven, fx limited back then but sometimes a little cartoonish, and often the wounded soldiers flail about for no apparent reason. Congrats to Skywalker Sound + Lucasfilm for restoration.
