Robert Smalls was born into slavery in SC, escaped during the Civil War by commandeering a Confederate ship, taking it to Union lines, with his family & other enslaved people aboard. He later became a CAPT in the U.S. Navy and a 5-term U.S. Congressman, advocating for civil rights and education.
