We need to improve LGBTQ+ reproductive health outcomes and their abortion/contraception care experiences. But services like pregnancy options counseling and contraceptive care are stigmatizing for LGBTQ+ people in many ways, which shapes and/or delays reproductive health care seeking. #reprosky

We know that LGBTQ+ people experience more social and reproductive health barriers. These latest results suggest that abortion bans/restrictions are likely to exacerbate, entrench, and compound the inequities that LGBTQ+ people already face.

This was one of the few studies to look at abortion use among LGB+ folks, and it used data from three large national cohort studies in the U.S.

Also: Pregnancies of het people who reported same-sex attractions/partners were 1.6x likely and pregnancies of people who reported being mostly het were 2x likely.

*Abortions in these groups have never been documented before.*

lgbtqhealthexce.bsky.social
What we found: Pregnancies of lesbian/gay people are more than 2x likely to end in an induced abortion, and pregnancies of bisexual people are 3x likely.

Caraballo @esqueer.net noted that it was unclear how the court would ultimately rule, but trans people should be aware of these additional threats to accessing care that could emerge if the Tennessee law is upheld. /🧵

The court could rule that when trans people are accessing gender-affirming medical care, they are not legally shielded from sex discrimination, which could complicate access to care for all trans people. /🧵

Here's what trans people and trans allies should know about US v Skrmetti, a Supreme Court case that challenges a Tennessee law banning trans youth from accessing gender-affirming health care. Based on our public discussion w/ @esqueer.net last week #TransLivesMatter #Transrights #HealthPolicy n/🧵
A graphic with text that says, "We need allies to speak up and be loud and vocal because our voices don't carry as well. Trans people make up a small proportion of the population and people will believe it more if it comes from a cis person." And text indicating this quote is from Alejandra Caraballo, known as @esqueer.net on Bluesky, and a clinical instructor at Harvard Law. There are also two small photos shown. One is of Caraballo speaking with the moderator Landon Hughes, and another shows the audience watching.

“Without this data, we erase the existence of #LGBTQ people from the data. However, their health needs are not eliminated. E.g. A clinician facing a trans man may not know what needs to be provided, like screening for cervical or breast cancer.”-Therese Rodriguez, Apicha #TransLivesMatter #MedSky
