Since I have so many new followers, I'm re-upping the announcement that MY BOOK IS OUT! It's called Identity, Oppression, and Diversity in Archaeology, and it's the result of 100 interviews with archaeologists, eight years of work, and so much community support! www.routledge.com/9780367743987 🏺
Identity, Oppression, and Diversity in Archaeology: Career Arcs
Identity, Oppression, and Diversity in Archaeology documents how racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, and ableism affect the demographics of archaeology and discusses how knowledge that archaeologi...

I'm starting to work on designing my "Archaeology and the Public" course for next spring. Does anyone have syllabi, assignments, or lesson plans they'd be willing to share on the subjects of public arch, collaborative arch, pseudoarch, or journalistic & pop culture depictions of arch?🏺 #academicsky

This, AND even if they were only the rights of a tiny minority, they'd be worth fighting for.

Trans rights are not the rights of a tiny minority, trans rights are everyone’s rights to self-determination, control of our bodies, and a society where opportunity and aesthetics are not restricted by sex assigned at birth

You should support and defend trans people because trans people are people

I don't know this HR lady, but there's some chance she could be an ally in those fights, if we don't alienate her by taking out our frustrations about our crumbling society on her. C'mon people.
lheathstout.bsky.social
Or think even bigger and organize for a society where there's free good-quality universal public education starting when people go back to work after a year of paid parental leave and unlimited paid sick time, so we don't NEED our employers to contract with a corporation to give us "backup care"

I also have no reason to believe that being unkind to her is going to have any positive effect! If you're pissed about your employer cutting your benefits, UNIONIZE.

But I have no reason to think that this was Denise in HR's idea, or that she had any power to oppose it. She might be the reason we still get half of the benefit we got last year! Who knows!
lheathstout.bsky.social
Now, I get it. Parents are absolutely not supported in our society. We have extremely minimal safety net, and a benefit from work that provided a shred of that net just got cut in half. It's enraging!
lheathstout.bsky.social
She wrote back with the answer to my question and also said "This is the kindest email I've received on this topic – thank you so much for understanding!"
lheathstout.bsky.social
The postdoc benefits person emailed out to say that we only get 5 days of Bright Horizons backup childcare instead of 10 this year due to, you know, *gestures at crumbling society*. I emailed back with "That's a shame, but thank you for letting me know" and a clarifying question.

UGH. People! Let's be clear about who our enemies are! The university admin staff is a potential ally who you should befriend, not an enemy you should be rude to. Strategy!

question for archeosky 🏺

my mate James Flexner (too smart to be v online) excavated this very distinct piece of transfer ware at a 19th c site in East Polynesia. despite being a sherd need, he's been unable to identify the original pattern. anyone recognise it?

"ironstone" is stamped on the base
an irregular sherd of poetry about 8cm by 4cm. it is white with a maroon transfer pattern of an elephant in foreground wearing a saddle with riders and an aggressive baking dog. in the background are the spires of an Orientalist palace. it's all very British raj

DID YOU KNOW that the biggest danger to the children of this world is moms who text?!
lheathstout.bsky.social
This morning, I was walking my child to school, holding their hand, and with my other hand, I pulled out my phone and sent my partner a quick text. A complete stranger said to me "Don't ignore your child's safety, looking at your phone!"

PSA: it is rude to comment on strangers' parenting.
lheathstout.bsky.social
So, everyone, if you see a stranger with a 3-year-old hurrying down the sidewalk at 8:37 on a Monday morning, consider keeping your goddamn parenting opinions to yourself.
lheathstout.bsky.social
I don't have time for that nonsense. I need to get this child to school and then get home in time for work, and after school and work, my child and I will need to eat some food, which is what I was texting my partner about.
lheathstout.bsky.social
What reaction are you expecting? Should I pause in the midst of my effort to get my kid to school and myself to work to thank you for this valuable insight, stranger who knows not a single thing about my life? Do you think you're catalyzing some kind of epiphany with your drive-by judgement?
