After the ban on the #Pride parade in #Budapest in June, Hungarian authorities are now targeting a demonstration for #QueerRights in the country for the second time. This time, it concerns the Pride planned this Saturday in the southern Hungarian city of Pécs.

It is an affront to Brussels.

#FacialRecognition vs. #FundamentalRights

The Hungarian government has not only banned a #Pride 🌈 event (again) — this time, police are authorized to use real-time facial recognition.

We are urging the Commission to intervene immediately ahead of the peaceful assembly this Saturday.

The Dutch parliamentary elections (29 October 2025) will be the first to take place under these new conditions, followed by Hungary’s general elections in April 2026.

We expect less transparency and more vulnerability to manipulation— both subtle and overt.

By framing their move as a “compliance safeguard,” Google & Meta avoid the complexity of the new rules.

The consequences for democracy are real:
🔹 Civil society voices will be silenced
🔹 More polarisation
🔹 Threats to election integrity

But does that free them from their responsibilities under the #DigitalServicesAct (DSA)?

❌ Absolutely not

They must still protect against risks to:
➡️ fair elections
➡️ free civic discourse

🚨 Together with 17 civil society organisations, Liberties is calling on Google & Meta to uphold their duty to protect democracy in Europe.

Both companies plan to stop carrying political, electoral & likely “social issue” ads in Oct 2025, when the #TTPA enters into force.
