⚠️ Introducing new powers to restrict our fundamental right to protest is not the answer

During times of fear people understandably want to see action, but restricting protest further is likely to fuel tensions by taking away legal and safe ways for people to make their voices heard

In times of fear people understandably want action - but restricting protest is likely to fuel tensions by removing legal and safe ways for people to be heard.

Being able to use protest to challenge govts and stand up for what we believe in is central to a healthy democracy. It must be upheld.

Police already have huge powers to restrict protests.

Handing them more would undermine our rights further while failing to keep people safe from violence like the horrific and heartbreaking anti-Semitic attack in Manchester.

Police to get broader powers to crack down on repeated protests
The move is not a ban on protests but "about restrictions and conditions", Shabana Mahmood tells the BBC.

Across the political spectrum, people are calling for protest rights to be protected.

Together we must resist laws that silence dissent - and stand up for freedoms that underpin our democracy.

Really timely piece from Akiko Hart, Director of @libertyhq.bsky.social, on the ECHR: context about what it does (and does not) do, options for reform at both UK and European level, and - most importantly of all - how progressives should talk about it
