Private equity didn’t just kill Toys “R” Us—it’s draining hospitals, nursing homes, daycare centers, and even local newsrooms.

This week’s Closer Look exposes how an industry that claims to “save” companies is actually hollowing out America.

"Since the last report, we’ve seen 22 local media launches, and 22 closures.

"Launches (predominantly digital-first, e.g. Substack) and closures are not evenly distributed.

"Closures disproportionately occurred in the most deprived urban districts with few titles". Launch areas tend to be richer.

We’ve launched our latest report into the state of local news provision across the UK. In this post, Joe Mitchell, PINF’s deputy director, explains why we do it and shares some of the key findings.

Stuck on remand for over a year, political prisoners' demands for bail and a fair trial are concessions the government could make today. Yet it's entirely possible this callous government will risk the lives of those who are not convicted of a crime and who – unlike Elbit – pose no threat to anyone

important also to note that all the strikers are in prison on remand - they have not yet been to court, but have been held by the state for months. lammy hadn't even responded to correspondence from MPs about the hunger strike; there is no plausible deniability for uk govt here.
It’s hard to exaggerate how bad the situation is in the UK. There are eight people on hunger strike and David Lammy recently claimed he wasn’t even aware of it. That hunger strikers may actually die is barely even news.

This 37% stat suggests reforms to asylum appeals - designed to ensure fewer strong cases go to a hearing bc the HO concedes early - are having some positive effect. The stats are incomplete & hard to interpret but suggest up to 60% of substantively resolved asylum appeals may now end successfully
Big jump in outstanding asylum appeals - nearly 70,000 waiting to be heard at the end of September. More than the initial decisions backlog. 60 weeks the average time to disposal.

37% of disposals now due to withdrawals - presumably as the Home Office realises how bad the decisions were.

It's worth reading this in context of Labour's intent to make it even harder to resist deportation if you've committed offences, because even now it's extremely hard to win: in fact if you don't have children & don't face harmful treatment on return, there's almost nothing you can do to succeed 1/🧵
