Our #DiaryFromTheSea series closes with reflections - shifting from sea to land, lessons carried forward, and a mission that continues.

The diaries end here, but the work to protect the dignity & human rights at sea goes on.

This week at the #UN in Geneva, LFJL raised urgent concerns on women’s rights in #Libya ahead of its #UPR. Women face exclusion in politics, online abuse, torture in detention & discriminatory nationality laws. Libya must act now: ensure participation, end abuse & reform citizenship.

LFJL joins 15+ civil society organisations in welcoming the arrest of El Hishri by German authorities on an ICC warrant. We commend Germany’s swift action & urge his prompt surrender to the ICC.

All #RomeStatute States Parties must fully cooperate with the Court to enable meaningful accountability

According to one of LFJL's partners working in Libya with victims of international crimes:

“The arrest of Khaled Al-Hishri represents a moment of profound significance for victims of grave violations in Libya, particularly those at Mitiga Prison."

LFJL welcomes the arrest of Khaled Mohamed Al Hishri, also known as Al Buti, in #Germany on the basis of an ICC Arrest Warrant. This could lead to the first trial of an alleged perpetrator for international crimes committed in #Libya since the #ICC started its investigations in 2011

Aside from the training, this week was about much more - understanding how the crew will work together, preparing mentally for what lies ahead, and building the readiness needed for real rescue operations.

Diary from the Sea, Week 1: Training Week
@sos-humanity.bsky.social

This week focused on learning key rescue procedures - from first aid and fire drills to how to approach boats in distress and follow emergency communications.

In the face of inhumane migration policies and ongoing, systematic #human_rights abuses, this work is about protecting lives, documenting realities, enforcing rights and making sure these stories are seen and heard.

Stay with us as we share personal diaries from the sea throughout this journey.

You’ll get a glimpse into daily life on the ship, meet the crew, and see what happens after migrants and refugees leave Libya - when the risks don’t end, but shift into a new and often invisible struggle for safety.

In this series we share what it’s like being on board #Humanity1, the search and rescue vessel of SOS Humanity responding to people in distress at sea.

Diary from the Sea: Ep. 1

LFJL, in collaboration with @sos-humanity.bsky.social, is supporting #migrants and refugees on the move through #Libya across the Central Mediterranean.
libyanjustice.bsky.social
It focuses on how to identify and document torture, including through medico-legal documentation, based on international law and standards.

The course is part of LFJL's Adala Academy — all about learning, all about human rights, all in Arabic.

To understand the true human cost of Europe’s migration policies, watch our latest film that reveals how #EU support to Libyan authorities traps migrants and refugees in cycles of violence and abuse, and why the EU support to Libyan authorities must end now.

Yesterday’s #EuropeanCourtofHumanRights ruling in S.S. and Others v. Italy is a blow to justice + accountability.

It misses the chance to affirm that EU and its Member States like #Italy cannot outsource responsibility for crimes committed against migrants + refugees in #Libya.

Have you watched our latest #film Escaping Libya’s Detention Industry?

The investigation traces how detention centres across #Libya have become a part of a cycle of extortion, abuse, release, and re-capture, fuelled by #EU support.

5/5 LFJL calls on the Court to fully investigate those most responsible for crimes committed. With an extended mandate, the Court must deepen engagement with civil society and ensure this new chapter leads to real progress against impunity in Libya.

libyanjustice.bsky.social
4/5 Despite the declaration, LFJL remains deeply concerned about Libya’s lack of genuine cooperation with the ICC and the ongoing crackdown on #civilsociety. This move should not be seen as a shift toward accountability by the Libyan authorities - real change requires much more.
libyanjustice.bsky.social
3/5 While the Court is currently examining the declaration, it could prove critical for advancing accountability and justice, extending the scope for investigation and prosecution, and by clarifying the ICC’s mandate and jurisdiction in Libya.
libyanjustice.bsky.social
2/5 As well as extending his original completion timeline to Spring 2026, the Prosecutor announced that Libya - though not a State Party to the #RomeStatute - submitted a declaration accepting ICC jurisdiction over crimes committed on its territory from 2011-2027.

1/5 Yesterday, #ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan briefed the UNSC on its #Libya investigation.

In the midst of armed violence in #Tripoli this week, the Prosecutor announced major updates to the ICC’s plans in Libya that could reshape justice and accountability efforts in the country.
