Hey Australia! 🇦🇺🗳️
We've spent 4 months collecting a WHOLE PACK OF LIES the Liberal Party of Australia is using to fool Aussies into voting for them

🧵 Cards #1 + #2 out of 8

#auspol #ausvotes #AusVotes2025 #factcheck #Dutton #CostOfLiving #energy #nuclear #immigration #renewables #business #housing
Liberal Lies collector card #1.
The Lie: "Labor's cost of living crisis!"
The Facts: Liberals left the economy with the highest inflation in over 30 years. Liberal Lies collector card #2.
The Lie: "No nuclear power means Australia is lagging behind!"
The Facts: Half the OECD don't have nuclear power, most of the other half have reduced it this century.

Well, Aussie punters - time for us to say adios for a while.

We got the important result: keeping the Liberal Party of Australia & their portfolio of lies out of government.

A power-sharing parliament would've been better, but we're content to avoid the worst.

Analysis of types of informal votes doesn't seem to be readily available at a seat level or even for every election.

There was an uptick in informal votes in Goldstein in 2022, from 2.21% to 3.43%. That has mostly reversed in this year's count, back to 2.28%

Community Independent @erchana4mcpherson.bsky.social in Gold Coast seat McPherson has bagged a very respectable 14% first preferences for a first run, but appears to have missed making the final 2.

With counting finished for the day, Zoe Daniel is ahead on the 2 candidate preferred by just 95 votes 😱 at 79.2% counted.

But get this:
The number of people in Goldstein who voted informally? 2,274! (so far)
Could have made the deciding vote for their MP! 🤯

Zoe Daniel in Goldstein is back to "Independent Likely" today, currently at 74% counted.

Community Independent Zoe Daniel projected to win Goldstein, defeating Tim Wilson for the second time.

Looks like a cracking swing to Greens given Labor's popularity. 👍
lie-collector.bsky.social
Yes, a shame. We must have looked during some brief period where the count was close.
lie-collector.bsky.social
Looks like the count's swung back to Tehan as the day progressed. 😔
lie-collector.bsky.social
There's a possibility that Greens and Labor preferences could push IND Kate Hook into second ahead of Gee.

ABC's current summary is "It is unclear the order candidates will finish and the AEC has abandoned its preference count. Pending further information Calare has been locked as in doubt."
lie-collector.bsky.social
Definitely some truth to that.

Our approach to labelling independents is:
- "Community Independent" if the independent was selected by a community group; otherwise
- "Climate200-supported Independent" if Climate200 has contributed to their campaign; otherwise
- just "Independent"

Interesting Independent #AusVotes2025 races we're still keeping an eye on:

- Bean
- Bradfield
- Calare
- Flinders
- Franklin
- Fremantle
- Goldstein
- Groom
- McPherson
- Monash
- Wannon

The count in Wannon seems to have tightened, and ABC has moved it back to "Lib Ahead" (rather than "Retain" last night). They have Liberal Dan Tehan ahead by just 401 votes at present.

Fingers crossed for you #AlexDyson and @voicesofwannon.bsky.social !

No need to be sorry. "Liberal" here is what the conservatives call their party! 🤪
lie-collector.bsky.social
Yeah, our team here was also barracking for a power-sharing government. Hopefully we'll still see a diverse Senate that forces Labor to produce more decent legislation.

Sadly, Australia, while in a good spot, is not immune to our democracy being downgraded.
The two major parties recently made it a whole lot worse by writing laws that make it much harder for non-major party competitors to fairly compete in elections.

BREAKING: Labor and Liberal may not agree on much but when it comes to introducing a new law to stop Clive Palmer, but which actually stops newcomers from competing with them in our elections, you can be sure they'll pass it and lock in the two-party system by Xmas www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3WT...

It seems many democracies are hogtied by poor electoral systems (first past the post, optional voting, corporate money, gerrymandering), and partisan politics and corporate interests that make it impossible to improve that system.
A Nobel Prize is waiting for whoever cuts that Gordian knot.

I am incredibly happy for Australia and Canada. But tbh these elections are just making me hyper aware of the, uh, “limitations” of the American electorate.

To be honest, we are most in need of a break! 😰

But whoever they pick, it seems likely we'll be back around next election.
