Nerdy (computer kind) PNW guy that is here until someone terrible buys this and ruins it too. I like to fly and build RC/FPV planes, hike/backpack/camp, snowboard, or mtb, when I'm not inside.
Encryption helps.

I would love this, because I was 3 years old then, and lived in ND which lags behind on trends, so I feel like my childhood was a strange mix of 80s a decade late plus 90s and Internet culture hitting all at once. would be really cool to see 1986 through my adult eyes.

As a guy who has run Linux for ages, recently tried and failed to get Davinci Resolve working in Ubuntu, that's one piece of software that although they say supports Linux, it's clearly not supported very well at all.

but I do agree Dems need to organize in a similar manner as what you've shown here as well.
February 24, 2025 at 7:31 PM
where did you get the opinion the boycotts were one day? there are hordes of people saying they aren't doing business with many companies until further notice. On top of that yes, there are economic blackout days scheduled. I think those are to show irrefutable correlation with the movement.
February 24, 2025 at 7:30 PM
I'm hopeful boycotts against anti-Dei companies and economic blackouts do something. If not, idk what will, but we've got to be prepared to get creative. given how protests get spun here then ignored, I don't think they're enough on their own.
February 24, 2025 at 7:04 PM
recently (last few decades) in the US? No, because the government here today listens to corporations and money, not people. If we want to change that, we have to use other tools besides protest. Protest can help augment it, but we must do other things that might actually get big moneys attention.
February 24, 2025 at 6:46 PM
we should protest anyway, but the result won't usually be the one we want.
February 24, 2025 at 5:04 AM
The right doesn't care what it stands for, they get told they're commies/socialists violently trying to destroy "what used to be beautiful American cities" and the message is lost on them. Or did you already forget that "Seattle burned down" in the BLM protests when the truth was far from that.
February 24, 2025 at 5:03 AM
Also, it's different in the US. The Capitol is thousands of miles from half the country. So a protest in every major city is the closest approximate, and that happened on presidents Day, but it's not the same as gathering everyone in the capitol and building a good support system to keep it going.
February 24, 2025 at 12:26 AM
I think that's a big reason people are organizing in different ways right now. Will it work? no idea. I kind of doubt the right message will get through no matter what we do, but it's worth a shot.
February 24, 2025 at 12:17 AM
I agree but can also promise even if nothing happens if it gets big the news most see will call it a violent antifa riot.
February 24, 2025 at 12:16 AM
Some of that is happening. There's also a whole series of economic blackouts and boycotts going on. Protesting didn't move the needle much last time... so... there are alternative approaches being attempted.

as a counterpoint, my 70 year old, computer illiterate mom has been running Ubuntu without hardly any support for 10 years. She's managed to not once break it because I told her years ago if she does need the command line, never to run a sudo command unless she understands what it's supposed to do.

They wouldn't hear it, because Fox wouldn't air that. That's 90% of the reason trump won because information that corrects or goes against Trump never gets to half the country. And now it's worse, as even PBS is giving Trump's insane ideas articles, like legitimize annexing Canada as a US State.
February 14, 2025 at 6:21 AM
Anyone who expects any part of the judicial system to actually be effective against trump after the last 8 years is delusional. You saw him get reelected and brush it off like convictions were nothing, right? The DoJ actively supports Trump. Being lawful won't work.
February 14, 2025 at 4:49 AM
It's worse than a lot of people realize. Congress was always spineless, now irrelevant given Musk and Trump basically own the Treasury now. The courts can't probably do much but say "not cool bro". Supreme Court was already Trump's. It's a nightmare. It's going to get ugly.
February 14, 2025 at 2:28 AM
yes. as an American, yes. It's bad. Literally every single institution and company seems to either have already bent a knee, is actively working against us citizens, it is shuttered. I'm really not exaggerating. It's BAD.
February 14, 2025 at 1:50 AM
As an American, PBS is now dead to me. Sorry Canadians. It's too bad anyone ever gives that maniac a chance to speak. 😞

RC plane hobbyist here. In the 4 years I've been building and flying RC planes, I've lost about $100 total, on one scratch-built plane that I lost control of and never found. Have 3 store bought planes, no unrepairable crashes. Doesn't have to be very expensive. It often is, but it's optional.

assuming Nvidia isn't allowed to just buy all would-be competitors... of course
January 28, 2025 at 4:42 PM
You're measuring the possible futures with the past and current and forgetting that when companies get too big they can have trouble innovating within a fast-moving niche. Someone taking a small chunk of what Nvidia does well, and making them irrelevant for it, is inevitable, eventually.
January 28, 2025 at 4:40 PM
because it's not just hardware. it's not just gpus. there are things that Nvidia is selling to big AI that maybe isn't beneficial on drastically different AI tech (not llm optimized stacks/compute)
