Tonight at 7:30 Central, we keep the celebration going with a look at the lasting legacy of Rare’s Donkey Kong series on future Donkey Kong titles.

Last month, we began celebrating Rare’s 40th anniversary with a look back at “Blast Corps” (1997), “Rare Replay” (2015), “Conker’s Bad Fur Day,” and “Killer Instinct Gold” (1996).

“GoldenEye 007” (1997) proved that first-person shooter death matches could be a blast not just on PC but on home consoles. And “Conker’s Bad Fur Day” (2001) introduced us to the auditory pleasures that one may only receive from the “Great Mighty Poo.”

And several of those games altered the course of the video game industry. Rare’s investment in Silicon Graphics workstations gave us the “Donkey Kong Country” series (starting in 1994) and ushered in a wave of pre-rendered graphics.

As you may expect, “Wonderlands” is packed full of fantasy RPG details like dark sorcerers, deadly skeletons, hungry mimics. This game also features numerous crab-based baddies determined to snip your adventure short with razer-sharp claws. Crab-tastic!

This spin-off of the “Borderlands” series delivers on the idea of a Dungeons & Dragons-based Borderlands game—an idea prototyped all the way back in “Borderlands 2” (2012) with “Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep” (2013) DLC.
