The hits keep coming in 26. The Bad Plus are calling it quits. 😢

I will enjoy their individual talents wherever they may be lent but sad to see that catalog of songs retired. Some of my all time favorites in there.

Neko Case at Smith Opera House.

Broke the seal of my live music year by pouring sweet honey into my ears. Ah that voice.
Her band was unflashily making all the right sounds at all the right times. Very tasteful guitar player. And I was really vibing with […]

Ended 2025 at 175 shows. Surpassing previous PR by 33! Feeling like that was an upper limit but guess we'll see where 2026 takes me.

Some standout shows:
1/24 Mikaela Davis, Maybird, Moho Collective, Overhand Sam etc @ Water Street Music Hall, Rochester
3/21 BASIC @ LUX, Rochester
5/4 Kurt […]

Closed out an incredible weekend in NYC with a solid one two three punch of musical delights.

Started with Eyal Maoz Band at Big Bar. Killer avant garde madness in perhaps the smallest venue I've ever seen music.

Then Sun Ra Arkestra with a tight 45 […]

Ten years and one day removed from being introduced to both All Them Witches and King Buffalo at the Bug Jar, seeing them share the bill once again at the much larger Brooklyn Steel last night was quite a treat. Heavy duty alcohol fueled rock out.

Live music vacation in the city, night one.

SML at Sultan Room.

Electronic analog, quiet loud, complex sparse, layers on layers of the-future-is-now glorious improv. Got the neurons firing overtime.

Sandwiched that with world class jazz in some hip […]

Saha Gnawa: s/t

Gnawa, for the uninitiated, is a traditional Moroccan music characterized by the constant chatter of qraqebs and the otherworldly groove of the guembri. It gives off an energy that is equally ancient and futuristic […]

Bitchin Bajas at Skylark Lounge.

I mean I enjoyed their show here a couple years ago but this felt like it was on a whole other level from that set, like crazy good.

A song on their new album is called Skylarking and I wondered if there was an outside […]

A group of local musicians have been putting on an Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas show every December for a dozen years. At some point it morphed into a full on Muppets thing too. They sell out a weekend full of shows every year. Never made it out for it […]
