Slightly remind of Jason Schreier's book Play Nice where it talked about Star Craft 2 and the missed effort to make it a esport.

Most famously when the business group within Korea compared themselves to the NFL and that Blizzard was the maker of the soccer ball. (Or something along those lines)

My take is that it is mainly targeted at Steam players who want to conveniently take their Steam library to their couch with a simple plug in and play option where you press a button and it works.

If you don't want that this is not for you.

My take on the steam machine(SM) is that it's unlikely to beat the big console players, but it doesn't need to beat them to hurt them.

Everyone is fighting over engagement and time, and if there are 5 mil who would have bought a PS5 to play on their couch now buy the SM, that is 5 mill less engaged

I agree has to be competitive to the pricing of other consoles out there; which I think will occur considering the Deck's pricing.

Otherwise I think the main demographic this is for (Steam/PC users who want console convenience on their couch) will just invest the money into upgrading their PC.

I mean sure I get it, but....

Considering the MS store comes installed on every Windows PC and windows makes up the bulk of Steam players. It always boggles my mind that MS never rebuilt the MS store to be a competitor to Steam. Especially now that MS owns the biggest PC games not from Valve.

I mean it got your attention and caused you to post on it...
so mission accomplished?

The notion of a Xbox store/ecosystem being on every platform aligns with MSFT's strategy.
The notion I've always struggled with is how despite having the MSFT store installed by default on every Windows PC they can't spruce it up to be a competitor to Steam. Doesn't forebode well for other platforms

This has been my thought and I'd hope it is true.

Yet I wonder if the damage is already done and if it can't be reversed. Your thoughts?

My big concern is that the industry has lost the ability to reach those who might not be within gaming, but would be interested with the right marketing.

Anyone else wish they would take the formula of Detroit and find a way to make a episodic game that comes out regularly and consistently like a tv show (I'm sure their games aren't cheap to produce, but I do wonder if they ever tried).
No just me ok.....
October 22, 2025 at 3:10 AM
I get what you're saying, but its a darn if you do darn if you don't situation.
While there is to many games being released they tend to be more on the indie side while the number of one time payment AAA games are getting smaller. To grow the industry we need games that speak to different people.
October 22, 2025 at 3:03 AM
Definitely relate to this.

I use to play more games, but ever since I became a parent, I’m mostly playing only the same GAAS because it behaves like a tv series.

Funny I still buy other games I would like to play eventually at a acceptable sale price, even though they’ve gone mostly untouched.

People that would care about Steam caving also have an undying loyalty to Steam.

The greatest accomplishment of any business is to achieve absolute loyalty such that they carve their identity around your brand. It is similar to what you see with Disney and Nintendo Adults.

I guess the real question for existing platform holders is why would you want to take your content to other platform when you could be Steam or Apple store.

MSFT kind of makes sense because they want their store on all hardware.

PS doesn't, their moves seem to hurt their platform's trajectory.
July 25, 2025 at 2:59 AM
Don't disagree, but Shawn Layden said the hope was that by bringing them to PC it would expose people and interest them in buying future titles on PS. Hermen Hulst also said the same thing back in 2024.

I think that is probably backfired and is speeding up PS decline, but 🤷‍♂️
July 25, 2025 at 2:51 AM
The decline of the "console war" likely threatens game quality, as the incentive for platform exclusives (often free from excessive microtransactions) diminishes. This shift will most likely push Sony and Microsoft towards games prioritizing revenue generation over quality (i.e EA, T2, etc).
July 25, 2025 at 2:43 AM
I think many were expecting something big to be announced for the end of year, but now that we're in July the odds of that happening seem diminished.
Is this the fallout of AAA trying to avoid GTA and can't move up their releases?

Those that are releasing games appear to be T2 or platform holders.

I like this opinion and have allot of thoughts on where the industry is.
Does anyone remember when we complained about games coming out to fast around 2006-2014, and now it seems like we're in the opposite situation.
In a perfect world these games could have failed fast before being announced 🤷‍♂️.
July 11, 2025 at 9:08 PM
As much I would like expedition 33 to change things. The game still took 6 years to develop same as any AAA. So even if a group wanted to replicate it's success I doubt we'll see the result till 2031 😔
June 28, 2025 at 7:15 AM
Number 2 is still one of the best games of all time. Went straight from crawling in 1 to running in 2.
June 28, 2025 at 7:11 AM
Its hard to not be pessimistic about Haven's future after hearing this, I mean can you think of a studio who had a successful release so close to one of their major leads leaving the studio?

(I would have hoped their game would at least launch though before Jade Raymond left😞)

Follow-up:
As someone who likes PS games where does PS go from here?
They seem the worst positioned given the industry's trajectory.
Their not a brand/ip like Nintendo
They're not growing like Steam in the Asian markets
They don't own massive publishers Xbox
And their not in the mobile market

I agree.
Although having listened to the latest podcast you said that Mario Kart is usually the 2nd game people get. So I guess my question is that unless World is the exception, what is that first game come release date? Best case its Donkey Kong which comes a month after release(does that matter?)
