a kind of disgusted fascination with this walking cartoon villain. There's no politics in that because nobody is going to watch this film who doesn't already find the man repulsive.

Where I think the film IS very good, and frightening, is the almost casual background way it shows the omnipresent

But on balance even Brody seems to find it hollow. Like sure, on a formal level it's compelling, but tbh a lot of Hollywood movies are now. They learned from all those great 1960s/70s films!

I think the point is that that BOA is a film about something. The stakes are very real. Whereas OBAA is basically a film about an imaginary "leftist" "revolutionary" devoid of actual, you know, politics. I guess I have to read the review to see why that's good.

He hated Inside Out and Everything Everywhere All At Once, loves the first two Star Wars prequels (thinks they are better than the originals), said that Shutter Island was the best film of 2010... he just has a lot of silly contrarian takes.

Well, that and the fact that their planning, construction, and sprawl serve very powerful people (developers, investors, lawyers), while doing things the other way tends to fail to enrich them.

I don't believe it's really a choice. Very few ppl have a say in any of this.
