Life. It's literally all we have.

... but is it any good?

power of the carceral state directed against ordinary migrants. Benicio del Toro kind of offhandedly doing the thing Bob was supposed to do.

Otherwise... I guess I wanted some content other than "racist villains are bad." It turns out that even actual racist villains believe that, somehow.

a kind of disgusted fascination with this walking cartoon villain. There's no politics in that because nobody is going to watch this film who doesn't already find the man repulsive.

Where I think the film IS very good, and frightening, is the almost casual background way it shows the omnipresent

But on balance even Brody seems to find it hollow. Like sure, on a formal level it's compelling, but tbh a lot of Hollywood movies are now. They learned from all those great 1960s/70s films!

The main difference - and to me the main flaw - is Lockjaw. So much of the plot becomes

Getting ready to watch e18 of The Return and casting about for all the theories about What The Fuck Was That.

This is extremely long but makes a very perceptive case that The Return is much like (what we think happened in) Mulholland Drive, only moreso. It accounts for an awful lot.
But Who Is the Dreamer? Twin Peaks: The Return - Politics/Letters Quarterly
For the last twenty years David Lynch has been making different iterations of the same story: someone isn’t who he thinks he is. Each of his films in this period tells two stories, one masking the oth...

...say more...

I think the point is that that BOA is a film about something. The stakes are very real. Whereas OBAA is basically a film about an imaginary "leftist" "revolutionary" devoid of actual, you know, politics. I guess I have to read the review to see why that's good.

He hated Inside Out and Everything Everywhere All At Once, loves the first two Star Wars prequels (thinks they are better than the originals), said that Shutter Island was the best film of 2010... he just has a lot of silly contrarian takes.

I don't remember, just they are always pumping his essays on Facebook, and countless times I've gone "oh for fuck's sake." Let me see what I can find.

Anyway, the reference to BOA was a pretty amusing wink, but that's, like, a movie.

I have a knee-jerk reaction to think the opposite of whatever Brody says. He has some really terrible takes.

I always love when hotties on here post hot workout selfies! Unfortunately, this is not one of them. I don't wear the topper during a run, but the headband look will do, I guess.

Well, that and the fact that their planning, construction, and sprawl serve very powerful people (developers, investors, lawyers), while doing things the other way tends to fail to enrich them.

I don't believe it's really a choice. Very few ppl have a say in any of this.

Allow me to present a Grook by Piet Hien (originally about the Channel Tunnel):

"A tunnel would be possible,
a bridge would also do,
but wouldn't it be better to
amalgamate the two?

Let bridge and tunnel undulate
in waves from shore to shore,
keeping green the memories
of those who went before."

Pretty awesome to check email after the holiday and realize that you entirely forgot a major work task due tomorrow. 🤯 It got done...

Also, because this is an impossible prompt to reply to once, let me present the saddest song in the world, if you are in Pittsburgh and it's 1994.

It just sounds like you know you're in a bad situation and that you're not the cause of it. 🫂

I still remember the day I turned 50 and got my card from the government informing me that it was illegal to have opinions about popular culture. It made me sad but those are the rules I guess.
