Watching "Ghost in the Shell" (1995) after "Angel's Egg" really draws attention to (some of) Oshii's thematic preoccupations (water, reflection, feathers, the tree of life, etc.) Now I want to give "GitS 2: Innocence" another shot, a movie I disliked as a teen for dumb teen reasons.

I don’t like getting drunk alone, but its incredibly embarrassing to forget how strong an imperial stout is, so maybe its better this way

Well I made it to 2026. This year I will finish my novel.

Spent NYE watching "Until the End of the World," a nearly 5 hour "road trip" movie about: the power of song and story, living under the threat of nuclear Armageddon, getting addicted to the machine that shows you your dreams, and finally figuring out your life after you turn thirty.

Ex Machina (2014) and Frankenstein (2025) would make a great double feature. if nothing else, Oscar Isaac plays a similar role in both.

The Brave Little Toaster. For better or worse, watching this movie repeatedly as a very young child was foundational for how I think about the world and my place in it.

I feel like the world's least-efficient writer... After six drafts of a given chapter, I finally feel like I have a passable *rough* draft.

Well, after saying that I was going to do it for approximately 1 calendar year, I impulse applied to an apartment and am now moving to Minneapolis in May.

I wanted to write a short swordfight, a handful of paragraphs at most, but now I've fallen down the rabbit hole of medieval longsword techniques.

I knew my anxiety issues had gotten worse over the past few years, but I wasn’t prepared for how much worse they had become. Describing my book and reading a paragraph to the class gave me a mild panic attack, so I can’t wait to see how bad an actual critique session goes. 🙃

My main problem with most books in the "craft of fiction" genre is that they want to collapse everything down to a single variable that discriminates good fiction from bad, i.e. tension, and then contort all their examples until they fit that single explanation.

In 2024, I finally made some meaningful progress in studying the humanities. I studied forty non-fiction books this year, a significant step up from the previous year, where I finished two.

I am once again trying to write a novel. Will I complete a draft that I want to share? Unclear...

But! My last attempt (in 2018 🙀) resulted in fewer characters written than my current attempt has words, so that's something like progress.
