Anything by Arnold Rauers is fun (Card Thief, Card Crawl, etc), all of the mobile Dragon Quest ports are portrait and work well, in the same vein the Professor Layton ports also work fine one handed. wish more games were portrait!

I just tested the dpad on my thor, I can confirm it doesn't have that issue! the dpad is very similar to the Vita's, clicky and small but I think it feels nice. That said, because of its placement playing dpad-centric games on the thor isn't particularly comfortable without a grip imo

being able to trip or send flying other hunters is a joy, I wish there was MORE interaction between hunters not less.

longsword should also cause damage to allies, is what I'm saying. it'd be funny

I was very skeptical of it (I didn't love elden ring to begin with!), and my first few hours of it weren't great, but once it clicked that it is a lightly randomized speedrunning game more than a roguelite I started to enjoy it

ah, so they've actually improved since Samus Returns lol

in that one the hardest difficulty was locked behind an amiibo. just an awful choice

the difficulty of the fights is like, so low on my list of problems with wilds. it is on there, but SO much else is too

could maybe see those as just weird inbetweens, but this is kinda what happens when you associate with AI. trust is immediately broken. shame since it has some really skilled people working on it, but qzilla sucks (and I've seen too many skilled artists celebrate genAI to give that much weight)

I don't really trust any company that has even dipped it's toes into genAI, but the Sekiro anime (according to its official site, so if that can be trusted) is fully hand-drawn:
at least according to the official website, this particular production is fully hand-drawn (assuming they are being truthful). doesn't mean one should support this company or this anime necessarily, but figured it was worth mentioning: sekiro-anime.jp/news.html#ne...

it might be a lie (and not wanting to support something from a company super jazzed about genAI wouldn't be unreasonable) but according to the official website it is fully hand-drawn: sekiro-anime.jp/news.html#ne...

one that has gone CRIMINALLY under the radar is FriendShapes, an rpg with "combat" that feels like an extended take on pacifist Undertale. Also very vibey, with a good mix of humor, beauty, and horror
FriendShapes on Steam
A jumpscare-free abstract horror existential crisis of a lite-RPG. Explore Digressions - areas that continue longer than they should with sets of randomized text events and map variations for a differ...

I really loved Cape Hideous, a weird wordless walk around a ship that is approaching a storm at sea. Every screen is alive with animation and detail, just a great vibey 30-60 minutes. also a really good soundtrack!
Cape Hideous on Steam
Amongst the motliest of all crews, an enigmatic woman prepares the ship to enter an intense thunderstorm raging in the middle of the ocean. What otherworldly mysteries lie within?

they definitely didn't want you to parry most attacks on reaction and instead wanted you to get hit/use dodge until you memorize the cadence. I enjoy this approach but I'm kinda shocked I don't see more complaints. it puts elden ring's weirdly delayed/timed swings to shame

the occasional incredibly stupid dialogue is part of what makes it so good!
May 2, 2025 at 3:29 PM
they already took this down too I see, they are MAD mad
April 30, 2025 at 1:19 AM
I do recommend the game if you can get it to work! it is a jrpg but takes a surprising amount of inspiration from Souls games and is a leaner experience than a lot of big budget jrpgs so I never felt it start to drag. combat is quick and engaging with a good amount of depth if you want to explore it
April 28, 2025 at 7:04 PM
I've seen some people playing on deck, so presumably it'll work. you'd definitely want the framerate stable enough to dodge/parry though. I think I saw a mod that tones down some graphical effects to smooth it out?

BoF4 is one of the absolute most beautiful games ever made. I hope more people try it with this!

but also whoever threw Yoshikawa's art into waifu2x or whatever for the header image on the gog page is my mortal enemy
April 25, 2025 at 6:46 PM
how weird to see when scrolling randomly on bluesky, that's my brother's review!
he'd be happy to know he got some people to try the game out (and so would I, Look Outside is incredible)
April 25, 2025 at 3:43 PM
Friendshapes mentioned! I'm so sad how few people have played that one, it is really great
April 24, 2025 at 5:40 AM
my favorite game of the year so far is Look Outside, a survival horror rpg maker game made in like 6 months. and it looks great! we don't need huge releases to validate a genre lmao (especially considering we just got Metaphor and Baldur's Gate anyway)

I'm looking forward to Clair Obscur, but fantastic turn-based rpgs come out all the time!

I don't know why I'm always so surprised that having fancy expensive 3d graphics is mandatory for a game to matter for so many people, it apparently will keep being the case forever
April 23, 2025 at 6:57 PM
I'm old so I prefer Daggerfall and Morrowind, but it is so weird how Oblivion is treated like JUST a joke compared the other ES games. it has some good stuff in it! let joy and whimsy into your hearts
April 21, 2025 at 11:14 PM
Clair Obscur, the phantom brave sequel, Maliki looks interesting (a game based on an early 2000s French webcomic?), Post Trauma might be good, an Amerzone remake. impossible to even kinda keep up with every release I'm interested in
