There is a piece of advice that might be related to this idea. It is from stoicism philosophy, we have to control what we can control. Just focus on things that are controllable. We have to embrace things that are outside our control. Learn from our past experience. Be reflective!

This theory can help you to track down the reason behind your failure and success. This theory works perfectly with self-reflection. Remember, reflecting on the ‘why’ behind your success and failure is the first step toward growth.

For example, if you got a perfect grade on a math test because you have a natural talent, you most likely will succeed in the future because of your talent. On the other hand, if you fail due to being sick or in a bad mood, the cause is unstable, and better conditions could lead to different results

3️⃣ Last but not least is about stability. This one is a bit tricky actually. So it examines whether the cause of our success or failure is stable or unstable. The cause is stable meaning it is consistent over time, while unstable meaning it might change in the future.

For example, if you fail a class presentation because you were too nervous, that’s something you can control, right? So it is called controllable. However, if it is because the LCD is suddenly going off or any technical errors, that is not under your control right? So it is called uncontrollable.

2️⃣ The second idea is called controllability. I bet you can predict just by seeing the term. Basically, this idea talks about whether the cause of our success or failure is under our control or not.

For example, your success in exams is because you are learning, then it comes from yourself, right? Yet, if your success is because of “luck,” like you accidentally choose the correct answer, then the reason behind your success comes from outside or external factors.
January 2, 2025 at 11:33 AM
1️⃣ The first idea is called Locus of control. This idea examines whether the cause of our success or failure is internal or external. Internal means something that comes from inside ourselves while external is outside ourselves.

Basically, this theory talks about why something happened, and what is the cause behind your success and failure. Attribution theory seeks an explanation of your success and failure in certain performances. Later, Weiner categorized 3 core ideas of his theory.

Self-reflection is super important. It can lead to our future actions, decisions, and outcomes. This time, I would like to share a good theory proposed by an American psychologist named Bernard Weiner. He named his theory “Attributional Theory.”

Reflecting on the reasons behind your success might help you to seize another success. On the other hand, if you reflect on your failure, you can learn, avoid the same mistakes and come up with better solutions.
January 2, 2025 at 11:33 AM
Great! I am sure that 2024 has been an amazing year for you, and your success is one of the things that prove that. It is important to reflect and look back to our previous success or even failure.

In Indonesia, we have a suitable proverb for this concept. “Berakit-rakit ke hulu, berenang-renang kemudian. Bersakit-sakit dahulu, bersenang-senang kemudian.” It means you have to endure challenges first before you can finally enjoy the rewards.

I encourage you to do delayed gratification. I admit that this is not easy. However, I have several tips that might help. First, you have to have a clear goal, having a clear goal can strengthen your motivation. Second, you can map your priority, as a learner you know what your first priority is.

On the other hand, instant gratification is when you take the small reward right now, you cannot resist the immediate pleasure. You can see the left side of the image, you choose to play video games even though you have unfinished assignments. You only follow your impulsive decision.

Delayed gratification is when you choose to wait for a bigger reward in the future, rather than taking a small reward right now. The example is the right side of the image. You choose to work on the assignments than playing video games. As a result, you will get a good grade. Patience is the key.

I will introduce you to a concept called “delayed and instant gratification”! Some of you have probably heard of this concept. This powerful concept can help us to have better control of ourselves which might lead to academic or even career success. So, what is delayed and instant gratification?

I bet most of you chose the right side, which is good! However, Sigmund Freud in his pleasure principle stated that humans have a tendency to seek immediate pleasure and avoid pain. In fact, that is actually human nature, totally normal. This might explain why some people choose the left side.
