“[T]he fact that we cannot save everything does not mean we cannot save anything and everything we can save is worth saving.”--Rebecca Solnit
You have the advantage of a parliamentary system.

We'd need to replace the core of our constitution to go to a parliamentary system, and, unfortunatatly, the drafters made amending our constitution exceptionally difficult.

Curious example. Your AI summary is basically correct. The "Know Nothing Party" was called that by outsiders (not its members) because members refused to talk about their party/secret society, not because they were proudly ignorant. They deserved the nickname, but they didn't revel in it.

I don't believe that the threats to PBS licenses are particularly serious. However, after the defunding of CPB, there was regime social media chatter about delicensing PBS stations because they were acting contrary to the national interest.

Then everything would be labeled "opinion."

Trump is already threatening the licenses of PBS stations. Imagine if he had a law that gave him an excuse to go after podcasters and Substacks.

The reports I'm seeing put him under water on immigration in all polls, with some variation on whether he's a little under water or significantly under water.

His actual policies poll much worse, but politically, that probably doesn't matter.

Looks post-apocalyptic.

It's more people telling themselves that their defeat *isn't preordained.* It's hard to stay motivated to fight without imagining what victory could look like.

There's a reason we tell people to "fight like they're a few points behind," not as though they're far behind.

It's good to see someone in Congress thinking about the structural problems in our government.

In that metaphor, I think that most of us (even those outside the US) are in steerage. There's really no choice for most of us but to try to keep the ship afloat.

Literally, it's an act like a bouncer forcibly removing a bum, i.e., a lowlife or someone similar. Figuratively, it's removing a person.

The article has a link to another article about accessibility features for people with visual impairments. Some of those look as though they'd be useful for a visually impaired older person I help out.

I'd suggest joining the chapter and offering to organize the work you want to see done. I'd expect the chapter to be responsive. If not, they're probably a number of people around you who'd appreciate a different chapter with a different focus.
December 24, 2025 at 8:32 PM
You could start a new chapter. We have multiple local chapters that (mostly) coordinate rather well.

Governors don't need an insurrection or invasion to deploy their Nation Guards, nor does the president when acting in DC.
December 24, 2025 at 8:20 PM
In DC, the president controls the local National Guard and can ask for National Guard deployment from states. That's not very different from what happens in states, except that the people of DC don't get to elect a governor and governors can't federalize other states' National Guards,.

The DC deployment (unlike the deployments in states) probably *is* lawful... another reason DC needs statehood.

It's stated this way because the litigation is at a preliminary stage. The ruling below was preliminary, so it would be abnormal for the Supreme Court to make a final decision.

No doubt. Otherwise, I could make Hillsdale College go away for good. But I think reporting spam was what the post meant.

I'm with you on the need for some way to deal with the scammers.

The "report as spam" option is probably what she had in mind.

FFS, he's not just trying to take our culture back a century and a half, he's trying to do the same to the military... not completely, but enough to seriously screw it up.

People who are frustrated with Democratic leadership need to vote in Democratic primaries, starting with state reps and working up. Better, they should *run* in those primaries.

I know how low turnout usually is.

In old fashioned language, a victim was a "complaining witness." Now they're just called "witnesses."

Imagine a trial for simple robbery ("mugging"). If there's loads of evidence, there's usually a plea. If there's a trial, it's generally just the judge or jury deciding if they believe the victim
