Architectural paint / finishes research isn’t just for buildings. We’re currently analysing the historic paint on two of London Museum of Water and Steam’s Cornish steam engines: The Ninety-Inch (1846) and The Hundred-Inch (1871).

We visited Temple Newsam recently, where the newly restored Butler’s Pantry was officially opened. Lincoln Conservation provided the architectural paint analysis of the historic paint and wallpaper schemes in this room!

The first step in conserving the painting was to remove the yellowed layer of degraded varnish. Removing the overpaint has been a slow process, but it has revealed many details, such as the ploughed fields in the background near the church spire, and the detailed costume of the Lady in Blue.
