Pictured below is Richard Lovell Edgeworth's copy of Samuel Johnson's 'A Dictionary of the English Language'. His annotations suggest that he used the dictionary to develop the code for his optical telegraphs.

The dictionary is held in the Maria Edgeworth Centre's collection.
