A few years ago a climate science colleague of mine said "When it gets really bad, they will blame us for not telling them how bad it would be."

Today - Alan Kohler made that prophecy come true in one of the most shameful examples of gaslighting I've ever seen.

As Trump abandons climate action, we must accept net zero won't happen
While markets and media were chasing Donald Trump’s tariff fiasco last week, something far more important was unfolding in East Palestine, Ohio.

I agree Ailie - it doesn't sit well with me either. Totally agree it is our job to share what we're privileged to study, but it sometimes feel like taking the p!$s. Particularly when researchers are asked to write a piece with a pre-determined narrative...

LA is in a high fire risk region & fire weather conditions are complex. So we @wwattribution.bsky.social looked at many lines of evidence. All show: our burning of fossil fuels increased the likelihood of such extreme fire weather conditions www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...

Ooh, and this one: "It is essential to highlight ways for scientists to effectively engage in science communication that maintains scientific credibility and trust in science and allows scientists to fulfil their roles as both scientists and citizens"
lindenashcroft.bsky.social
And this quote "...it is pointless to try to separate the citizen from the scientist or to impose silence to create false credibility based on unattainable and undesirable neutrality"
lindenashcroft.bsky.social
I particularly like the distinction between neutral science:
"science free from values,” compared to objective science: “science free from personal biases of scientists”

The lines show the CO2 increases in the past, the star shows the @metoffice.bsky.social CO2 prediction for this year at the Moana Loa observatory, the pink shows where we need to be to stay under 1.5C of global warming. We've got a lot of work to do
A man pointing to a graph on a screen. There's a pink band going down, a black line going up and down, moving outside the pink band as the graph goes to the right

Fascinating to hear from @richardabetts.bsky.social this morning on predicting CO2 emissions for the coming year as well as truly defining current global warming levels.

So much work to hone in on one number!
