📊 What did we find?

🔸 Most of the socio-economic background (SEB) and ethnic inequalities in entry to professional occupations are driven by employer-side decisions made during the recruitment process

One marker of a weakening labor market: there are now more job seekers than job openings in the US.

I regularly come back to this graph when talking to people about how we’re in a really different world now.

And important to note that these are for EHCP only. There will be many more young people with SEND for these conditions, but no EHCP

Essential @nuffieldfoundation.org funded note by @theifs.bsky.social on England's SEND system - highly topical this autumn. Here's the growth in the number of EHCPs over the last decade+.

We should not accept 1 in 8 of our 16-24 year olds shut out of learning or earning. Dreadful for young people, economy & society.

Purposeful government can make a difference - but it will require learning lessons, real focus & new resource. Me in the @financialtimes.com

We must clear a path for young people outside full-time education
As GCSE results land, we should realise that training alongside decent work is a better next step for some 16-year-olds

A level results are out! And as many have reported, there was an overall improvement in the proportion of students gaining the top grades.

But its not good news for everyone: with London & the South East continuing to pull away from the rest of the country, and boys slightly ahead of girls.

Did I mention that I love Lucy? 💪💪💪
lindseymacmillan.bsky.social
What a journey! It’s not even about the win, although 😭. It’s my girl (who hates football) putting on a kit and playing with a ball all week. And my boys cheering on the team more than they even do the mens. These girls are changing the world and I am delighted to watch the influence they have 🦁🦁🦁

At @britishacademy.bsky.social this morning for the launch of an important @nuffieldfoundation.org report on Raising of the Participation age to 18 by @mattdickson.bsky.social & colleagues. This is a vital contribution of high quality evidence to an important policy area @uniofbathipr.bsky.social

As promised, some further analysis:

LAs that have experienced larger falls in take-up relative to what might have been expected tend to have higher female employment rates and lower unemployment rates… perhaps indicating.. more competition for places

Lucy Bronze on how she decided to blast her penalty down the middle (and score).

“Statistically it’s risky for the goal keeper to stand still… so yeah, I love maths”.

Most stressful penalty shoot out in ages! Got there in the end ❤️💃🏼🙋🏻‍♀️💪🦁🦁🦁

The 10ppt drop in disadvantaged 2 year old take up in the past year is really worrying for the Opportunities Mission goals - though there is caution urged around those headline numbers. Our CEPEO Early Years lead, Prof Claire Crawford, is looking into what might be going on. Watch this space 👀

New stats out today from DfE give us our first comprehensive look at take-up of the new early education entitlements. Very interesting reading, including a potentially concerning fall in take-up for disadvantaged 2-yr-olds. We've been doing some digging and will have more to say over next few days.
