The 'short proposal' option here would be a great conference poster for someone doing linguistic fieldwork on an under-described language. Focussed conferences like this are really fun too. The other thing I should mention is that it will run for one year only (thanks, 'teach out') so it isn't something I can justify spending a lot of time preparing as it won't have pay-off in future years.
