Outside of people who want bleeding edge stuff and those who make back the money they spend on work or stuff they sell, the new machine tax is not worth it.

I picked up an off-lease ThinkPad for half price with active warranty. Perfect for travel, runs Linux, and powerful enough for web dev.

Considering that laptops and tablets have pretty much plateaued in the last 2-4 years for most people, there isn't as big of a reason to get the absolute latest and greatest. With Apple, you can still get AppleCare if it makes you feel more at ease.

Yeah, their refurbished computers and iPads are what I recommend people who want near-new Apple device on a budget. The other option are heavily discounted models that retailers want to clear inventory.
