Hello! My name is Lino and I live in Port Moody, BC, Canada. I am an associate teaching professor (computer science) at Northeastern University, Vancouver campus. I am the father of two girls (16 and 11). I was born in Mexico but have lived in Canada most of my adult life (dual citizen).

My teen was telling me how much she learned from TV shows when she was little. She specifically mentioned “The cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That” and “Mr. Peabody and Sherman.”
Tons of shows that are both fun and educational. However, once kids turn ten, almost everything they get is garbage.

Something I’ve decided to do from now on is to only write reference letters for students I know very well… beyond the classroom. Example: they came to office hours, they were TAs for my courses, I saw them volunteering or helping their peers.

Both my daughters had soccer games today. One of them won and the other one got hit in the face with the ball.

We borrowed the English (original) and Spanish (translation) versions of this graphic novel so that my youngest daughter can improve her reading skills in Spanish.

When you speak at events you usually get swag. Last week I talked at an event and got, among other things, some coffee beans!

My goal/challenge for next semester is to teach computational thinking + Python programming while asking my students to not use their laptops and phones during at least 50% of class time.

The second season of Man on the Inside is not about solving a case. It is about the importance of higher education. Particularly the arts and social sciences. Higher education not as a way to make more money but as a way to become a well rounded individual and make strong, long lasting connections.

Guy near Waterfront Station (Vancouver) is yelling stuff at people passing by. I got “Ándele, ándele!”
While I dislike being reduced to a stereotype, I need to acknowledge that I appreciate he picked one that correctly matches my ethnicity.

Algo que evito es hablar Spanglish. Cuando di mi plática sobre inteligencia artificial en México lo hice completamente en español. Solo puse entre paréntesis la palabra ‘bias’ porque sesgo es una palabra que nunca he usado en mi vida diaria.
