Yup, went to a Saturday club when I was about 10. We put on an improvised version of The Tempest. We even made our own costumes.

It's a key part of the function of the gifts in relation to the spherical law and the presentinent/surmise/premonition. Also, freedom with guidance.

I think this is related to the didactic elements of Froebel's approach. Children would be introduced to each gift in turn, taught how to open the box, perceive the gift as a whole, then use the parts to play, then recreate the whole and return the gift to its box.
