If you’ve ever asked AI to summarize a paper, you know it provides only a surface-level and uncritical description. Even if you asked it for a review, what criteria would it use to provide meaningful critical feedback? If it said “X is unclear”, how would you know humans would feel that way?

Oh FFS. Because what overburdened peer review systems really need is more noise between the reviewers & ACs. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Screenshot of AAAI automated review announcement reading:

1. Supplementary First-Stage Reviews: LLM-generated reviews will be included as one component of the
initial review stage, providing an additional perspective alongside traditional human expert evaluations.
2. Discussion Summary Assistance: LLMs will assist the Senior Program Committee (SPC) members by
summarizing reviewer discussions, helping to highlight key points of consensus and disagreement among
human reviewers.

So I take it we're still not going to get to hear Grogu speak? I've been waiting since 2019 (from before we knew his name!) to learn whether they'd make him sound like Yoda or have him just speak Basic, as he obviously should 😆

I found an example in the wild on here of a possible suffix usage that we were discussing in class. I want to show my students, but since the post is critical of the administration, I'm worried about potential consequences, even though the content is entirely irrelevant. This is what we've come to.

One of my greatest regrets is deciding it was too annoying to get to Knockdown and passing up seeing Kneecap when I had the chance.

Did they not see Kaʻiana in **Chief of War**?

Did you mean for it to go left-to-right? I only see it moving left too.

The ambiguity of this headline is pretty great. Have we reached the singularity, and this is the only actual proof?
Headline at Wired.com: "Hundreds of Google AI Workers Were Fired Amid Fight Over Working Conditions"

Ironically, considering what I've linked here, I'll also venture to say that another of the worst catastrophes of this era will be the complete meltdown of standards for American journalism. I didn't expect to see so many publications vying to become state media in my lifetime.

I say aloud often that one of the worst catastrophes of this era will be the dismantling of the American science infrastructure. Sorry to be reposting the NYT, but the wording of this headline is more stark and apt than usual. 🎁 link (via my institutional subscription, which I'm not paying for)

I tried to put a moratorium on sending out requests this week but I was overruled :)

I'm not under the illusion that these acts will halt the progress of fascism, but I'm so thankful for these people. I hope they know they've led principled lives and given us examples to look up to.

Someday when we can look back at this time, we'll see that there were some profiles in courage. Many judges who made the right call, so many incredibly brave civil servants, labor and immigrant leaders, a handful of college administrator (but a few), even a couple of politicians.

Host: There are new calls this morning for RFK Jr.'s resignation, and those calls coming from inside HHS itself. More than 1,000 current and former HHS workers are making this demand in a letter released this morning. They say his leadership has "put the health of all Americans at risk"

Mine are usually 8pm to give them a little cushion in case they work during the day, but also to make it clear that I believe sleep is an important part of the human trajectory.

Yeah sorry, I have not!

I just want something to make a difference so badly. Big kudos to the CDC folks, I fervently hope something comes of it.

BREAKING: Big moment as CDC staff stage a mass walkout.

They have lined the street outside its HQ to greet and salute the four top officials who have resigned in protest at RFK Jr’s attack on the agency’s science base.

Yup, I immediately added it to the slides where I talk about this kind of thing 😅

The irony, of course, is that the “phonetic way to say umami” is [umami].
The chili crisps from Oo'mämē, the phonetic way to say umami, come in 4 global versions — Chinese, Moroccan, Indian, and Mexican.

Youglish only finds 11 videos so far but at least 2 (maybe 3?) have the mispronunciation.

Another thing that has worked is to save the textgrid object from the object window directly, rather than doing it when combined with the spectrogram

This happens to me but I haven't really figured out how to fix it permanently. Sometimes hitting Ctrl-S a few times will eventually bring up the normal dialog box.
